I wish we could get the electorate to vote on policies rather than who they've "always voted for" its Labour up here, Tory in some parts of SE regardless of policy or circumstance or previous actions. Having 2 main parties doesn't help, I much prefer the PR model for the scottish parliament as it reduces the chance of legislation being railroaded through. Lots of small parties compromising produces less extreme results.
Not that I like the results of all the elections up here right enough!
Coalitions are not evil in themselves - I shudder to think just how bad things could have got with a minority tory OR labour govt !eek!:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0 -
Do you know the sad thing is this things are bad just now and people are struggling badly but whats it gonna be like when the real cuts and benefit changes kick in. The govermnment have always taken care of their own ie the rich and always will. I really worry about folk, we r a sort of low middle income family and we r struggling how r people on low incomes coping l just dont know. Thing are going to get very scary.
I recall the poverty of the 70s we had nothing and my mum went without meals to feed us as a result i have always have my cupboards and freezer filled to the hilt my family cant grasp what it would be like to not be able to go without the basics.l really worry for my kids future. What happened to make poverty history, not creating it while sending millions and billions in foriegn aid to other countries while children starve in Great Britain and not to mention the money spent on the olympics, sheer madness.0 -
I'm so pleased we can talk about things in here and stay nice
I think one of the big obstacles is human nature itself - give some people an inch and they definitely will take a mile. Some get a taste of power in govt and it goes right to their heads - they forget their roots and their compassion and go all out for the power and the money. On the other end of the scale, you give some people a free handout and they immediately stop trying to help themselves and hold their hand out for more, become demanding.
We seem to have lost the middle, the balance and the common sense. As somebody said look at the foreign aid and the olympics - while at the same time there are food banks and people like Monnagran's poor man who had nothing but the clothes he stood in.
Politicians are too far removed from real life. Never had a proper job, never mixed with real people, never lift their heads from their balance sheets. Can't think beyond the next meeting or cocktail party or holiday.0 -
l have been in poverty action for many years and have met many Mps and they will promise the earth and it saddens me so much because deep down you know they are telling you what you want to hear. They have no concept of what it feels like to be hungry, cold their children having no shoes etc years ago labour mps came from working class backgrounds and would fight your cause and would be a proper opposition, who now adays will stand up for the underdog because new labour are a joke they are all millionaires etc who also have no concept of real life. This is whats frightening when people hit rock bottom they take helping hand from extreme parties who of course have their own agenda and as history has proven these extremists get a taste for power and eventually we all suffer. We need stong opposition to save us from this coalition but im afriad we have no such party unless the labour party gets back to its grass roots and listen to what or nation wants and needs.0

Thank gawd there are still some people who can see what's going on. I get slated in another forum for saying all this - but it is true and they do always look after number one, I wouldnt fuss if we really were "all in it together" but we definitely are NOT.
Trouble is we see it but nothing is changing and I don't think it always a case of being apathetic which is always thrown up. I do wonder why many keep voting the same people into Parliament, they did even when the expenses scandal happened.
Political point here...If the unions are unhappy why they don't put their own candidates forward at an election or some of those that represent charities or the disadvantaged.
Surely someone would be successful and in these difficult times where just about everyone is affected we'd see a reaction?midnight_express wrote: »The tories don't want us "all in it together" they want us fighting amongst ourselves. They want to divide and rule.

I think some doctors have put themselves forward to try and take seats to stop the quiet but ever happening privatisation of the NHS going through."A strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others" Barnyard the children's film.

I agree with all that has been said so far...tryingtobethrifty wrote: »I think some doctors have put themselves forward to try and take seats to stop the quiet but ever happening privatisation of the NHS going through.
Think you are right...
You can talk politics and religion and even disagree if it's done respectfully but at present just like politicians sing from the same hymn sheet, many are doing the same in the population but it's because we are hurting. And we are in it together but not in the way "You know who means!" And the important thing is that we don't divide and fight amongst ourselves.
And as an earlier poster said we don't really have a democracy at present(probably haven't for a long time)and yet our politcians criticse what other governments around the world do and about the unrest there but its different when it happens here..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

We had a letter from the council today outlining what they are doing with the cuts in CT benefits, it does not make good reading, while pensioners will be spared, those on JSA or low wages are going to be the ones hit hardest.......What a surpriseBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Not forgetting those affected by the Bedroom tax and those on DLA switching to(If they can get it...)PIP or a version of ESA...more to worry about and cause further unrest..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
