My friends/family know what time I usually get home from work and have dinner, but they still phone during that time. They might be happy to shovel food in their mouth whilst chatting on their phone, but I like to wind down after work.

Fair enough. I just don't happen to know what time anybody has dinner, even if they happen to eat at the same time every night. If I worried about that I wouldn't be able to ring anyone between 6 and 9, which only leaves an hour to make calls. I do usually ask if I'm interrupting anything and insist on ringing back later if I am.

I rarely answer my house phone, if it's important they will leave a message. I rarely answer my front door either unless I know I have a delivery. I can't stand the sense of entitlement people will have once they know you have a mobile phone. All of a sudden it means, " you WILL be contactable ". if I don't feel like talking right there and then, I won't answer my phone. I am entitled to that decision surely?! I don't like mobiles anymore, the world has gone bonkers with them. Was in a restaurant the other day, there was a couple sitting at the table next to us. Her phone goes off, she answers and proceeds to just have a general chit chat with her mate while her bf/husband looks on. I mean blimey, you are out for a meal. Turn the blimmin thing off.

oh don't get me started ! I have a work colleague, lovely woman, but she will completely cut you off mid-conversation if her mobile rings. And I have another one who thinks nothing of physically kissing her phone when she's been on her mobile to one of her "beloveds" (ie husband or grown-up son). This is generally about 4 times in a normal work day. I think I know more about her husband and son's daily lives than I do about my own OHs, because of course she doesn't leave her desk to take/make her personal calls.

I live next to a walkway (alley) which is made up of flagstones, not concrete, as it is very uneaven when it rains it floods, making it impossible to walk trhough without getting wet.

a few months ago we had all that rain and lo and behold the path flooded, now anyone who lives in the area KNOWS that the path floods and you will end up getting wet. now i was chilling out in my sweats when i heard this massive bang on the door, looked out the window and saw a local woman who always walks past my house on her travels. thinking something was wrong i rush to the door opening it expecting the worst (I have two cats).

she stood their swaying from side to side, clearly intoxicated and started shouting very loudly 'how am i supposed to walk through there?' she started calling me all the named under the sun because the path was flooded! like it was my fault the council path is uneven. she stood there for about 4 minuites just shouting abuse, then stormed up the path slamming my gate (nearly taking it off the hinges in the process) I was quite taken aback especially as she was quite clearly plastered and she is normaly so quiet. so as of then i always keep my door locked and don't answer it unless the person is expected!

I another funny one :o I don't like answering my door to people I do not know, when I first moved here from a flat I hated it and would ignore it, I have got better now though and I will answer it once I've checked out the window and spyhole because I find if I ignore it it will bug me and I will wonder what they wanted. I have connections for a house phone here but I used to unplug it as I hated answering it, when it broke I never bothered replacing and I don not miss it! With my mobile I will answer it if it's withheld or a strange number but i am always a bit weary :o We are a paranoid lot aren't we :D

Before I had kids I would never answer the door but now the kids make too much noise so I really need to answer it.

One day prior to the kids coming along I chose to not answer the door as it was my day off work and I was chilling in my pyjamas. They knocked harder again I chose to ignore it. 2 minutes later burgalar bill was in my back garden trying to gain access into my back door. Im not sure who got the biggest fright when I ran up to the back door screaming at him!

The only time I don't answer is if its dark and I'm on my own. Seems strange to me not to. If the phone is a withheld number then I don't answer unless I'm expecting someone like my doctor to call.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I don't answer it because when I was young my mother told me not to answer the door to strangers. She hasn't told me that it is now okay to do so.

I do answer the door if someone knocks but usually with the chain on so I can see who it is. We don't tend to get sales people as we are in a maisonette and they seem to be too lazy to walk up the stairs lol. I'm glad we open the door though as the other day I received over £500 worth of hair straighteners, hairdryers etc I didn't know I'd won from Heat magazine in June :)

I don't answer my house phone, in fact it only ever gets used if I need to ring an 0845 number and my mobile phone only gets answered if I know the phone number.
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

  • I can usually see if it's double glazing/salesmen through the bay window.

Generally, once they realise I can see them wandering up and down the road with their clipboards - and have been fixed with the basilisk stare , they don't even bother knocking.

If I'm upstairs, I look out the window. If I don't like the look of them, I don't even call down.

People don't call on the spur of the moment and if the house were on fire, they'd make a bit more noise about it to get my attention.

I don't answer calls on my mobile that I don't recognise either.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
