We have a "special" knock in our family.

Started in the 2nd world war by my grandfather, he used to be on fire watch so my nan would know who was knocking late at night.

We have a porch that is never locked so postie just opens the door and drops anything large there. Other than that I open the front door and let the dogs into the porch

It needs to be something pretty important to face down two full sets of gleaming whites :rotfl:

I do not answer the door if I am not expecting someone to visit me. All parcel are sent to my business address as I know that myself or a member of staff will always be there.

I only have the house phone for my mam to call me from Turkey where she lives, and she calls and a pre arranged time.

With regards to my mobile I will answer if I know the number. If it is a number I do not know I will send it to answer phone and then call back if it is someone I want to talk to.

I work 7 days a week running my own business and having a part time job working from home. My free time is important to me and I resent being bothered by cold callers, PPI recorded messages and charity collections.

This thread got me thinking and other than the odd parcel delivery or neighbour no one knocks on my door other than cold callers.

All my friends just come in, (I've told them to) the kids mates are the same, but they tend to stand in the porch and shout "hello". If the post man has a package for me he opens the porch door shouts "post" then leaves the package in the door way.

When my back/knee is really bad it can take me a couple of mins to get off the couch and to the door so it's just easier that way. Maybe I should stop answering every knock because now I think about it most of them are useless lol

Then again as I said I have the nosy gene :o:rotfl:

I find it more frustrating to sit there wondering and hoping the knocking stops than answering the door. If it is someone unwanted I have no problem sending them away.

I will not answer the door at silly hours of the night. Safety first.

If it is a delivery for a neighbour I will refuse to take it. Had a neighbour trying to collect the delivery at 3am...

I do cos it's usually my neighbour reminding me to shut the car windows in case it rains, lol.

Any cold callers I have no hesitation in just saying no thanks.

  • I am sorry, but I think this is just plain rude. Someone knocks on your door and you don't answer, just because you aren't expecting anyone! I can't ignore a ringing phone or someone at the door, I like to be civil!

I don't answer my home phone either if I don't recognise the number or it comes up as unavailable. I know it's folks jobs, but I find the whole cold calling business really invasive. I used to have a sign on my old front door which read 'if you haven't been invited -you better have a damn good reason for being here!' Think I might see if I can find another one :D No one that knows me would be offended by it.

It is not rude at all, but sometimes the people knocking at the door is not necessarily to be a salesman, a donation collector or religion linked. I once was sleeping after my holiday and got someone knocking on my door and I got up really angrily thinking it might be some salesman then I opened the door with a cold face asking: what is the matter? A young lad was standing out quite far away from the door and told me: I just past by and I saw you have left your keys in the lock hole.

My daughters drop me in it at times, the door will go and they will make so much noise that I will have no choice but to answer, usually it is someone trying to sell me dusters or someone wanting me to change energy supplier, I really don't like to open it unless I know who it is.
