Never. There's a perfectly good bell. People who bang their fists against the door instead of pushing the button are too stupid to be dealt with.

Whilst I'm sure that was meant to be a tad tongue-in-cheek, I have to say, I'm amazed at the amount of people who hammer on the door instead on pressing the button on the video entry phone. All that actually achieves for them is they risk me not realising there's someone there (I'm quite deaf - an actual knock goes unheard if the lounge door is shut, whereas the entry phone has a very loud tone which is audible all over the bungalow, even by me) and if I do realise there's someone there, I still lift the receiver to activate the camera before deciding whether or not to go to the door.:D

I never answer the door unless I am expecting someone. My reason is mainly due to my mental health though and several bad experiences I've had in my life.

Several people comment how awkward I am to get hold off but that is there problem not mine, if is an emergency the people that matter have my mobile number or can put a note through the door.
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

I can see why an unexpected knock on the door can mess with a persons mental health I really can - it does give you the jitters.

I lean out of an upstairs window and if its a salesman or other unwanted person i just tell them im the baby sitter or something haha
The opposite of what you know...is also true

Actually, it wasn't tongue-in-check. I really do ignore people who bang on the door. Often, I think they're the same people who ignore the sign that I downloaded from MSE and printed out, asking vendors and charity collectors to go away.

  • I used to answer the door to anyone and everyone lol but a guy who knocked the other day creeped me out a fair bit so now I only answer to people I am expecting.

The guy the other day knocked and said he worked as a sports instructor offering classes in different sports and would anyone in the house be interested. I said that we might be and he offered to drop off some information about the classes. I was a little confused because surely he would have a leaflet of some sort with him already with types of classes and times on and I queried it. He then said he would have to come in the house and give a presentation first. At that point alarm bells went off in my head and I had a closer look at him: generic sports gear (no club name etc), clipboard with a blank piece of paper on, no leaflets (certainly no presentation information!) etc. I just told him I didn't have time for a presentation but would be happy to take a leaflet or something but as soon as I said that, his face closed down and he walked off to knock on the next house. My OH thought I was over reacting when I told him about it but at the time I was convinced he wanted to get in the house to either check what stuff we had worth taking or to actually rob me then and there.

I get jumpy when I'm home alone with the little one though!

three times in the last week I've had unexpected knocks. This is weird for me, it doesn't happen a lot!
Might be the postman with a parcel for a neighbour?

We have just received the requested sticker for the letterbox from Royal Mail and it's no more substantial than a sticky address label. :(

We had police round and installed various security stuff including CCTV cameras. If people are stupid enough to think they're dummies then that's their prob :D

I don't answer the door without checking ID and when couriers reply with "Delivery" I now ask whether it's for us or not. If it isn't for us I don't even open the door.

I got fed up with couriers leaving smelly secondhand car parts in my hall for neighbours who have three times opened stuff addressed to us. I don't want oily hands pawing through my stuff. We don't ask them to take our stuff it's all marked please do not leave order with neighbours.
