Stocks and shares ISA

Hi,

I've invested £4000 to a stocks and shares ISA. The funds have cleared into my online share dealing account now. Question is, do I have to invest these in stocks and shares before the April 5th deadline, or is the fact that the money is in the ISA holding account 'wrapper' now enough to count? Can I then spend a couple of weeks looking at the market for shares to buy with the £4000 and invest at a later date?

Thanks folks...

You can invest at your leisure; all that matters is that the money is in the account.

Anyone with comparison info for a Mini Stocks and Shares ISA novice, please? Cheapest on fees or commission, and bearing in mind little time to apply for facility pre 5th April deadline? Best out of HSBC, Halifax bank, Hargreaves Landsdown...others?
  • I've found iDealing(.com) to be good value for general online share trading - but this is the first time I've taken an ISA with them. So far so good. You might find that a highstreet option is the best now though considering there's very little time to be applying for things by mail (although iDealing are actually very quick to turn around applications - they processed mine the day after I posted it).

what do you want to invest in with the S&S ISA? Different investments will lead to a different answer. Shares, ITs, UT/OEICS/SICAVs etc?

Bearing in mind the deadline, it doesn't matter. Go for the one that can open the ISA before the 5th ( try Selftrade, they're very quick ). You can always move the account if it doesn't suit.

cheerfulcat - thanks, I'll look into Selftrade urgently re current Tax Year.

dunstonh - ready for the new Tax Year, clearly I'll need to learn more about options of what to invest in with the MINI Stocks & Shares ISA. Is their an info source you can recommend, please, for learning about pros and cons of shares, ITs, UT/OEICS/SICAVs etc?

selftrade are good for shares but expensive for funds.

Online submissions are fine right upto 5th April so you do have a bit of time to decide funds or shares for this chunk. (SICAV, OEIC and UT are all funds. Treat ITs as shares)

  • I use III for my normal shares and are in the process of setting up a stocks and shares ISA with them too.

£25 annual charge and the normal £10 per share trade.
