my son ran up a bit of a bill with sky by playing games on the red button (advertised in every programme ) There was no password to enter however and he didnt realise that by just clicking onto the game he was paying each time, so he was seeing what each one did before deciding to play them.
I didnt punish him or contact Sky as i think its an important lesson to learn for us all, I didnt take the time to check they were free and he didnt bother to read the pop-up confirming payment.
In the case of the OP however I dont think the son is clever to knowingly bypass the authorisation of the parent by entering the password himself, I'd call that stealing - no different to helping himself to my purse. I would be coming down heavily on him im afraid OP, not looking for someone else to blame.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais

why do parents give children devices where they can quite easily run up bills .... the ipad is not a toy and children shouldnt be using it ,
My children use the iPad as a special treat to watch clips etc on the cbbc website, but that is it. They are sat carefully on the sofa.
I was shocked yesterday when I was at a soft play place and there was a little boy (about 4 I would guess) running around with one. He took it into the football area, and at one point left it on the side in there!0 -
I wouldn't even bother calling Apple tbh.0

Thanks for the replies. I know it's tantamount to stealing and that's why he has been disciplined but as another poster said he's not really aware of the value of £70. (Well perhaps a little more so now!) But he's still clever in my eyes.
I am going to ring apple because I think it's worth a try. Also thanks for the heads up about turning off the in-app purchase function, I wasn't aware of it. Thanks anyway.0 -
You do realise that you can completely disable in-app purchases?0

I pads do have a place for children, yes they are not 'toys', but valuable learning tools which is why schools are now purchasing them to use with children as young as three years old.
How did your son know your password? If you have told him it, then it should have come with an explanation of what the password is for and when it should be used (i.e. check with an adult first) At 6 years old he is old enough to explain to.
Glad you got sorted, I'm sure many have learned from the same mistake in the past!:)0 -

What a bizarre notion - for many children, especially those with special needs, they are a valuable educational device. Thankfully we've moved on from dotheboys hall...Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
