Coo this is going to be interesting.

What happens if you don't get on with your neighbour?

Is you neighbour responsible for checking if all is there and not dammage?

What happens if it gets damaged at your neighbour?

I can see this causing a LOT of problems for senders.

What's the problem, most delivery services do this already - better than leaving it outside for someone to nick it.

Well I'll be opting out. Leaving it with my neighbour would mean I'm less likely to receive it than even Yodel's best efforts.

If something gets left outside and stolen then the retailer should still be liable for the loss, especially if there is no proof of delivery.
If however an item gets delivered to a neighbour and the neighbour won't hand it over or denies getting it, it will probably be far harder getting a refund.

It could also lead to far more problems with regards to ebay/paypal sales.
A buyer who didn't get their item may have an almost impossible job winning a paypal dispute as the tracking will show that the goods were delivered even if the buyer doesn't get them.

This already happens all the time where I live, I receive parcels for at least 4 neighbours and they likewise, there have never been any problems but maybe I just have 'nice honest' neighbours.

Opting out requires you to display a sticker on your door.

Why couldn't they have just turned this into an extension/a variation of their "Safe Place" nomination scheme?

how do you compare the two?
    How does Safeplace work?

Can you imagine the paperwork and cost involved in doing that?
I doubt if too many people have a "safe place" nomination recorded with RM so this probably isn't too difficult to administer, but if most of the households in the UK filled out and submitted a form stating what they want done with packages that couldn't be delivered, I wouldn't be surprised to find that a new department would need to be set up in each RM delivery office. (the cost of which would need to be passed on to the customers).

IMO, simply having an "opt in" to the scheme sticker on your postbox or door should really be all that is required, so any postie can see it and immediately know that they can drop the package off with a neighbour.

I wonder how the opt out option will work with flats (I can't see them mentioned on the RM site). I live in a block of flats and would opt out, but maybe some of my neighbours might be okay with the scheme. The postman doesn't come into the block so will the main door have to be covered in stickers!
