It isnt very accurate under 20weeks even private scans.

A visual inspection of a fetus at 17-20wks is difficult and not always correct.
Females can have very enlarged gential areas making it look like a boy.
We were never allowed to sex the babies until they were 20week plus and sometimes then it was hard to see for 100%.

I was told at 15 weeks accurately,

If you google nub theory and skull theory there are many people who believe they can tell, both worked for me !

No you can't. My 1st baby was delivered after we were told he was seriously ill and not going to survive when I was at 17 weeks gestation. I saw the baby, which looked like a girl as the genitals were not formed. I had an amnio though and a PM to establish cause and from them they identified baby was a boy.

Hiya, hope so! I had a 12 week scan today and the consultant told me to 90% accuracy. Depends on equipment and if your friend's is an NHS pic then no way! I have been told that lots of cords are mistaken for boy bits to the untrained eye!

I found out the sex of my baby at 17 weeks. This was done by a very experienced sonographer using 4d scanning equipment. I couldn't see clearly from the scan myself when he was showing me what I was expecting. He got it right though.

I am not sure if they could tell at 12 weeks to be honest. I doubt it would show clearly enough on a scan photo to determine a babies sex.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Think its easier to guarantee a boy. When I had both my 16 week scans, they did close ups of the testicles so my husband could be ABSOLUTELY SURE. Harder to tell with a girl apparently, they could be tucking things between their legs.

My OB did all of my scans, including one at about 13 weeks for the nuchal test. I think he said around 15-16 weeks would be a more accurate scan, for sexing purposes. Or possibly he said he wouldn't tell me until 15-16 weeks at the earliest. (I was desperate to know as early as possible!) Something like that. Youngest is 3 years old now so my memory of maternity care is starting to become vague...

I had a private scan at 14+6 with DS and it was obvious, even to me, that I was having a boy. His penis was very very clear on the scan and my husband actually spotted it before the consultant...

That said, It was a 4d scan and I think we we're just lucky with the position he was in. At a standard 2d scan when the fetus is actually 12 weeks old I would think it is almost impossible - they just look like a wriggly bean at that point.

  • I find the whole need to know the sex of a baby really, really disappointing. Unless there is a medical reason to know, why take away one of the few wonderful surprises left in life?

My son and his wife didn't want to know but it was virtually impossible to buy neutral baby clothes- everything is pink or blue because everyone knows these days.

When i was pregnant 20 odd years ago, learning the sex of your baby was like a reward for having had to go through amnio etc as there was a risk of abnormality with your baby. Keep it a surprise please!

I can see your point. When i had my kids they never revealed the sex of the baby and i was happy to wait but when my daughter gets pregnant she says she will want to know the sex of her baby and i'm looking forward to knowing too so i can buy little nick nacks in pink and blue.
