We have loads of those spiders in our house. I really hate spiders, especially since being bitten by one and they send shivers up and down my spine, but the ones you describe, I'm ok with. It's the big boney ones that make me run a mile!

You'll probably start seeing more of them soon, as we're coming up to spider season. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear!

Nothing about spiders is normal! They are pure evil. Freaky little things, why does anything need that many legs? Or eyes??

Cant say i'm fond of spiders but i'm certainly not scared of them. Ive got one in my bedroom now thats been moving around for days but i aint keen on the cobwebs they leave behind.

Now moths and butterflies are a different kettle of fish. I see one i screw my eyes up and my mouth clamps shut. Ive never really analysed it as i know they cant hurt me. They even have pretty wings (but i still cant stand them).

Spiders hate horse chestnuts so in the autumn I collect conkers to put in my rooms and use a chestnut extract like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/151-s-More-Spiders-500ml/dp/B002EISUUS/ref=tag_stp_s2_edpp_url to spray to keep them away. Its worked so far *touch wood*
  • For the last couple of years I've done the spreading conkers around the house thing. I don't think there's any scientific backing for it, but I've not had spiders since so it's worth a try for arachnophobes (though obviously won't help for another couple of months)
  • Get someone you trust with you Judi, and let one land on you. Just for a few seconds. It does help :)

Gem - I do definately think it's a boy thing, at a LARP event earlier in the year the undersides of the tents were covered in slugs when we packed away, I was retching in a bag and my BF and his mate were seeing who can crawl inside the tent and punch the slugs furthest from the inside!!

With the spiders, like Jojo said is it worth googling all the nasties that spiders eat? Might make you more inclined to think they're okay?

Also my friend swears that bars of natural soap and chestnuts keep spiders away. Explain why there's nuts and soap under every piece of furniture in her otherwise pristine home ;)

Good grief, what a bunch of wimps. Spiders are beautiful and harmless. You've got more chance of being bitten by your next-door neighbour than by a spider (in the UK - you do need to know what you are dealing with if you are in, say, Australia).

In our house we carefully scoop them up (yes, with bare hands) and put them outside before the cats eat them. A cat with spider legs trailing out of her mouth is an unpleasant sight.

Except the one who lived in a corner of the bathroom ceiling, he/she was well out of cat range and live there for the best part of a year, and used to stroll out onto the ceiling to say hello whenever anyone turned the light on.
