Faulty CD but no POP

I purchased a CD from HMV and after getting it home, I thought that my speakers were up the frizz. I checked the connections and then played the CD on another player. Basically the CD is unusable as there is *alot* of static interference that obviously occurred at the point of transfer onto the CD.
My problem is that I wasn't given a receipt (which I failed to realise at the time) and I paid in cash so I have no POP.
I just want to check that there is nothing that I can do and I'm going to have to write this off aren't I?

Could always send it to the record label and see if they send a replacement.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0

Apart from their goodwill, you have no rights.

Worth a try in case they remember you though?0 -
Can you not pop back to HMV and see if you recognise who you bought it from? Perhaps they will remember you.Thinking critically since 1996....0

I guess that it's worth a try; I won't know unless I ask. Thanks for the advice!0

CD's are digital, so should all be alike (well, identical in data terms) - what was it? May be worth searching online in case anyone else is suffering with it?
It is possible you're a victim of the loudness war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war which makes certain CD's sound like they're clipping like crazy!0 -

I really wish that I could attach a track so that you can hear it. When I played the first track, I thought that the problem was my speakers and a loose connection. The only way that I can describe it is a lot of static and crackling and it almost sounded as though the cd was skipping (effectively playing in short segments). To clarify, the cd definitely was not skipping, it is most definitely the transfer. I have done a google search but have found nothing that sounds like what I am experiencing.
I think that it may be worth sending it back to the label and just seeing what they have to say. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm £10 out.0 -
If you can remember what time you purchased it have a go at getting HMV finding the purchase on their 'system'. They may be able/willing to do so.0

How did you pay?
If it was by credit or debit card, then you might be able to persuade HMV to help if you can produce a statement, showing that a purchase was made from that particular store at the price your CD was being sold on the date you purchased.
It won't state what you purchased, but it will show you purchased something.0 -
Contact the label - ask if they've heard of this before? I assume other CD's play just fine, and only this one sounds bad?0
