npower -backbilling on a prepayment meter!!

Hi Everyone,

I have just received a letter from npower regarding my electricity prepayment meter and could do with some advice.

The letter stated that i had been undercharged for my electricity, due to my meter not being correctly reset since the price rises and that I had a debt on my account, the letter gave no details of this debt but 'reassured' me that they would write to me again to tell me how much I would have to pay back.
So i decided to ring npower for clarrification on this as i couldn't understand how this could happen as i have had my meter looked regulary over the last 2 years so assumed that i was paying the newer prices.
However, when i finally got through to an advisor I was told that my debt was nearly £300!
It seems that my meter has not been reset at all so my friendly advisor told me to ignore that letter as a new one would be on the way 'within 8 weeks' to give me all the details of the debt and how i could pay it back.

Not happy with an 8 week wait I spoke to energy watch who said that it had to be resolved with ten days, so i had to ring npower again....more confusion with the second call when npower then informed me that they did not have an accurate debt amount as my meter readings had all been estimated. (Strange when the meter gets looked at every couple of months?)

third phonecall....npower would cancel the debt all bar the first £70. But I am still not satisfied, Why am I liable for a debt that is of npowers making? they have admitted that it was their mistake not to have the meters reset by the engineers so why should i pay for their mistake? it doesnt seem right. Shouldnt they write off all the debt?

Any advice would be gratefully received.
