Getting bills with a prepay meter?
Hey guys just a quick question, I recently left scottish power for both my electric and gas which were both on prepay. The changeover was fine but the thing is that now scottish power are sending me final bills for these meters. They are asking me for £130 for the electric and were originally asking me for £600 for the gas. The gas has now been bought down to £40 but my question is are they allowed to do this. I called them and they say its for missing payments, but how can I have missing payments on a key meter? I pay for what I use and nothing else. I really dont want to pay them but they are now sending me debt collector letters! What should I do????

its probably because they didnt reset your meter when prices went up and therefore you wouldnt be paying enough each week. There is big kick-up about this just now because its up to them too reset as you cant do that yourself.Dig your heels in and make big fuss and they might reduce what they say is owing0

If it is due to your meter not being updated they are allowed to charge you, although energywatch take a dim view of it which is probably why they have knocked so much off your gas bill.
The other possibility is you have been using someone elses key to charge the meter, in which case the payments won't have been credited to your account. You should always use the key given to you by your supplier, not one from the another supplier/previous tenant/neighbour/etc.0 -
I never thought of these things, my gas meter was installed about two years ago, not sure if this is a old or new one?? Scottish power have always been strange with bills. They have always sent me bills saying im in credit, no your not... I just ignored them, maybe I shouldnt off!! I never received bills before with previous suppliers so thought was a bit strange! Anyways I'm going to call them again and see what they say, im sure I will have to pay up though.... never mind!!0

Here's one of my previous posts:-
I am on a pre-payment meter for my elecricity only as I have no gas. After hearing bad stories about NPower and looking at the U Switch site I decided to switch from NPower to Ebico, which I did through Ebico's site. After I had been switched over, I got a bill from NPower saying that I owed them £198! How, I thought, can I be in debt when I have a meter? After looking at some threads on this board I came to the conclusion that my meter had not been adjusted for over 18 months to reflect new price rises, but this was the responsibility of the supplier and not me. I spoke to a few buck passing automatons at NPower, but had to threaten them with Energywatch in the end because they were just ignoring my requests for a resolution. Even with this threat they did nothing so I made a complaint on the EnergyWatch website and within a week got a letter from them saying that they have warned NPower to retract my bill within 10 days and give me notification, otherwise they would initiate a prosecution against NPower. Ten days passed but so did Xmas and New Year, and last Saturday's post brought the letter that I had been waiting for. They admitted the mistake had been due to incorrect tarrifs and that they were withdrawing the request for payment. Yay!! One for the good guys.
I note of warning:- NPower know what they are doing yet continue to rob people who are less informed, for that reason alone I would switch immediately, if I hadn't already.
Thanks to Martin, MSE and the posters on this subject-you've saved me nearly £200!more dollar$ than sense0
