Really sorry to read about poor Sid, but think it was the only decision you could've made for the best xx:A"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

What a brave decision OP, many people would have just passed the problem on and washed their hands of poor Sid. It shows how loved he was - my thoughts are with you and your family xx

Really sorry about your dog op, you must be hurting terribly at the moment but I think you did the right thing for your dog.
I know a woman who had this with her dalmation and it is a heart breaking decision to make.0 -
Sorry to hear this OP. Poor Sid, I hope your family and his doggy friend are coping as well as can be expected in this situation x0

Thank you all ( well most ) for your very kind replies.
For those of you that are intrested in how we came to the dianosis, all of Sid's tests came back negative. We had a appointment with the behaviourist next week.
Sadly we didn't need it as Sid turned on me, the sofa and generally anything in the way on Friday including the wall and door. Dh managed to film a very short video on his phone to show the vet. Thankfully the children were in bed and we managed to keep out the way until he clamed down ( 5mins or so ). He was lay by me fast asleep without his muzzle, I was reading and dh was on his laptop, there was no noise that startled him. He woke up and went crazy, he did manage to give me a good scratch on my foot. His eyes went hard again ( which dh got on the video ) and after he just looked confused, and slept all day Saturday.
We took the video to show our vet who had no doubt it was rage, we took the desicion to have him PTS on Sunday morning to give us all chance to say our goodbyes, our vet was fantastic and did offer to collect him late Saturday after surgery had closed. They even opened the surgery early on Sunday morning so we would be the only ones there.
He was sadated first so we could take his muzzle off, and he slipped away quite peacefully in my arms. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, made so much worse by the fact he was his normal bouncy self on Sunday morning. But I do know it was for the best and we could never risk it happening again.
Our other springer is looking a little lost and getting extra fuss ! there is a big Sid shaped hole in our lives which will never be filled.
I really hoped I could get through this without breaking down again, I haven't managed it
Once again thank you for all your lovely replies

What a very sad outcome for you but obviously for the best. At least he is out of his misery, it must have been confusing for him wondering why he was being treated differently all of a sudden.
I have not heard of this condition before.
It must have been heartbreaking to have a young dog put down that most of the time appeared healthy and normal but you know in your own mind that it was the right thing to do as the 'rages' seemed to be happening more frequently.0 -
So sorry for you and your family.
We had a 7-year old dalmatian - the softest dog you could imagine. One night he was scratching the kitchen door, father went down and he was going beserk. Tried to attack Daddy who had to put a kitchen chair between himself and the dog. The noise was terrible.
A very kind vet came round even though it was the early hours in the morning. By the time he arrived the dog was calm but the vet diagnosed epilepsy and it was kinder to everyone that he be PTS straight away. If/when it happened again, he could have gone for any of us and we might not have been able to defend ourselves.
Desperately sad
