Accepting the 'ticket' (fixed penalty notice) is admission of guilt. In court, the CPS requires proof that you were speeding and in this case your admission of guilt would provide that. I doubt they actually recorded any physical evidence of you speeding beyond a number on the laser gun.

If you want to 'get away with it'; you should never admit to the offence at the road side, quote any numbers or verbally accept their accusations in any way; but be polite & apologetic. "I didn't think I was going that fast but I'm sorry to have taken up your time" usually reduces it to just a ticking off unless they have video evidence.

Of course another way is don't speed. Urban speed limits are there for a good reason. National ones are not, but that's a different story. I'm very worried that you weren't even aware that you were doing 45mph.

So what speed were you doing?

Normal form is to take the points, pay the fine and avoid [STRIKE]getting caught[/STRIKE] doing it again.

Exactly! Can't do the time, don't do the crime!
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • They do allow cars to break the speed limit. Otherwise why would the have speed cameras, speed traps? When I mean allow I mean build cars that are capable of breaking the law.

If we were to build cars that weren't capable of breaking the law, we'd be going everywhere at the slowest limit, which is 20MPH.

It would take a long time to get down the M6 at that rate...

Good news! you did not get a parking ticket,:j you would have to be not moving for that?? Unfortunately you did by own admission appear to be travelling above speed limit :o

    SO!!!!

Bad news! you did get a ticket for speeding:eek:

Bad news! by accepting the ticket 45mph in 30 zone? you basically admitted to it.:(

Bad news! you were caught speeding, at too high a speed for any safety course, so you will have to pay and get points:(

It has happened to a lot of motorists/posters etc,

You will not get any where, saying my word against police hiding in bushes with big police cars and really big speed guns :o

Have you been driving for a while or just newly qualified?
Parking tickets and speeding tickets are somewhat different.
Also I do not know anyone you uses a sat nav instead of the inbuilt clock etc??
Also it is not reccommended to speed in a car with your child, partner and dogs! Think about it!!!

Put it down to experience and drive accordingly. SORRY!

Must have been a big bush to hide the car and bobby in high viz jacket? amazing why every cop who catches someone speeding must have been hiding in a bush ; ) !!!!!! ever heard of hidden in plain sight? maybe he was there all the time, you just didn't seen him as you were concentrating on the end of your bonnet which is where many motorists look.

You can reject the fixed penalty and opt to have the case heard in magistrates' court. If doing this, ensure any requirement to produce your driving documents at a Police station is met beforehand. You do not want further charges adding to your burden.

The Officer's prior opinion you were speeding, backed up by the evidence of an approved device, such as a laser speed meter is sufficient to see you convicted. If you take this to Court and plead not guilty, you give up any discount for an early guilty plea and if found guilty will see your costs/fine increase to a much higher level than the £60 you can accept now.

An individual on an average income would see a fine of around £250 to £450 plus costs, plus victim support charge.

In addition, 45 in a 30 would probably see you given more than three points. The magistrates' guidelines indicate 4-6 points is possible.

If you do opt for Court, you could elect for a Newton Hearing to challenge the alleged speed. As this is not likely to greatly affect the conviction or the penalty, this is probably not the right route.

The pitfalls of rejecting the fixed penalty appear to outweigh any benefits. I suggest accepting it and moving on. In future you may wish to consider that;-

    - many forces apply the old ACPO guideline and don't start prosecution until you hit limit + 10% + 2mph (35 in a 30) and

    - driving at upto 42 in a 30 (limit + 10% + 9mph) is likely to see you offered a speed awareness course in lieu of prosecution in England.

My dials are not 100% accurate no ones are! My gps sat nav will say 30 whilst my car is on 34/35.
Correct. They OVER READ. Therefore your actual speed will be LOWER than the indicated speed.
They use them as wagons to carry goods like dogs weapons etc. yes they are pursuit cars but they wouldn't send one after a fast car they'd use the fast saloons.
No, TRAFFIC POLICE use Estate cars basically because they're the only type of car that can carry all the gear they need to carry.

The Police Volvos are turbo charged 200+ BHP estate cars.

This is a TV programme following motorway traffic police:

    http://youtu.be/JkfHJH9Pfos

6 minutes 40 seconds: BMW Touring.

    10 minutes: Volvo.

Throughout the whole video, the majority of marked police traffic cars are estates...
You say if they assume your speeding by the type of car/driver etc how could he have seen 1/2 a mile out they were obviously measuring every car!
They do measure every car, especially ones looking like they're going faster than anyone else. And they can measure half a mile away.
I like the police if I was doing something wrong then fine
YOU WERE DOING SOMETHING WRONG !!!!!!!
but just think this as money gathering excersice. It's not even a hotspot for crashes or anything just ridiculous in my eyes but fine if that's how it works.

The speed limits apply everywhere, not just where there are accidents.

One time I got caught speeding was prior to GATSOs, that is how long ago it was, was at 7am on a Sunday morning and I was doing just below 60 on an empty 40MPH dual carriageway. Copper with speed gun steps out from behind a tree, sticks hand up. I stop, he comes over to me and asks me what speed I was doing. No point denying it so I told him just below 60 - about 58. He said I was doing 56. We had a comment about my speedo being quite accurate and how rare my car at the time was becoming, I took my FPN and exchanged pleasantries, bid him a good day and moved on with my life.

Pretty much every motorist speeds. The 100% observant clever ones won't get caught, most will at some point. Take your ticket, accept the slap on the wrist, think of the £60 fine as a tax on your stupidity and move on. There are so many people with one or two speeding convictions that most insurance companies don't even penalise you any more for it.

Truth hurts at times - you were over the speed limit....end of !

Either accept the faxt or fight it in court and be prepaired to lose a lot more.

I got pinged by a camera van whilst I was in my van last year, I was dong 65 in a 50, got a fine in the post eventually, paid it and got points, couldnt do the speed awareness courseas I was 1mph over the cut off limit. Yes I was pi55ed off too, but nowt I could do about it, grin and bear it and move on.

Made me a better driver though as I am far more aware now of my speed than I was then.

Can I make a suggestion? The best course of action would be for you to post your driving licence back to the DVLA and explain that you're actually too daft to be allowed on the road.
