Halifax Clarity Card Rejection

  • Last year I also applied for this card and was rejected. I also have no debts (except token £14 mortgage), a credit rating of 999 and a healthy income. It was suggested that I may not look like a good prospect for them to make money on as I always pay off my Barclaycard each month.

    Hi All,

    I'm seeking opinions/advice.

I have just had a online credit card application rejected for a Halifax clarity card.

    Current Position:
    £36,000 Gross salary,
Full Time employment with the same employer for 1.4 years.
999 credit score on credit expert. With "6 positive factors" influenceing my credit score.
    No debt,
Use Credit cards only to gain the buyer protection and pay off in full immediately.
Live overseas and use parents address (listed on my credit file as only historic occupancy for 15years and 4 months duration) for correspondence.

    Past history:
I have 6 accounts on my credit file, one is a current account.
    4 are settled accounts.
1 is active but has no outstanding debt.
I have had missed payments 5 years ago and arrangement to pay a overdraft which was settled nearly four years ago.

I get credit card companies bending over at present for my custom, so I can't really understand why I have been rejected. I live overseas and will be on leave in two weeks and wanted to pick up this specialist card when I was home. Would they have rejected my application because of my IP address? (Mozambique)

    Any Ideas?

    Tom

Credit Reference Agencies credit score doesn't mean much when used by the banks. Credit card companies use different methods for accepting new customers. Looking through your information you mentioned that you missed payments 5 years ago and entered into an arrangement to repay the fee, this might be the reason you might have not been accepted. (Adverse information normally stays on file for 6 years).

I suggest you write to Halifax with additional information and a real person will re-asses your application (no computer involved). Wish you luck.

I got rejected too, for the Rewards Clarity.

I asked if it was because they didn't feel I'd be profitable (always having paid off in full), and the lady said "I don't think so, it's just Halifax is a responsible lender".

Yet the month prior Halifax were offering me a *guaranteed* All-In-One Card (offer came by post), and the month after my rejection, guaranteed All-In-One Cards when I logged into Online Banking. I also got offered a guaranteed All-In-One card 2 months prior, on the telephone.

If they denied me on such grounds as being a "responsible lender", how can they justify giving me a different guaranteed credit card?

I'm an existing customer with Halifax (have a reward current account, and already had an All-In-One card with them which I fully closed around 12 months prior - always paid off in full).

Seems like the Clarity card requires a higher credit score.

Don't cry over it. If in or near London, the Metro Bank CC is just as good. The only caveat being that you can't pay the bill by DD.

    Here

Not for 'Mozambique man' though. If he doesn't live here, he should look elsewhere or simply get his parents to apply for a CC and if successful, can attach the Direct Debit payments to his bank account.
  • How do you get a higher score than 999?

I've just awarded myself 9999, however I am charging myself thirty quid a month for it.

For £30/month, I'll award you a score of 9E+99 and send you guaranteed* offers through the post.

    * - subject to appropriate credit check.
  • Thanks for your interest; I was just trying to support the OP. As the card was just for holiday use, I got another recommended card (Post Office) instead.
