Can we get a new kitchen for £1000?

  • If you are able to do most of the work yourself its entirely possible to replace a kitchen for £1000, particularly if its a small kitchen!

I've got a B&Q kitchen in my rental property that was fitted 5 years ago and is still in great condition, that cost me about £600 all in, but i did get the units and doors during one of their 'sale' periods. This kitchen was one of the cheapest in their range.

I've also got a B&Q kitchen (mid-range) in my current property, again DIY fitted but this kitchen is at least double the size, i've got 10 meters of worktop in this one! This cost me under £2000 to do the whole room, that included all tiling, decoration, a part laminate and part carpet flooring (its a kitchen / diner). This one was fitted 3 years ago, and again is wearing well.
  • Do you need to change the carcasses OP? Is it just the doors that are falling apart?

If some/all of the carcasses are ok then just look at replacing what needs to be replaced! You'll save a fortune just changing the doors

The doors are the best bit really, I think the carcasses may be older than everything else. I also need to change the arrangement as the current one has very little floor space and feels closed off even though we have an open plan kitchen/living room.

Yes it is for cabs etc but as others have said don't expect it to last a lifetime. Assuming the range is outwith the budget of £1k and so is fitting then you'll do fine with an Ikea kitchen but make sure you've someone who knows how to fit it. They don't have a service gap at the back!. Roughly how many wall and floor units are we talking about and how long is the worktop run? Don't put laminate down in a kitchen even if it says "suitable for". Use vinyl sheet flooring if you are tight obn budget.

    Cheers

I might be being silly here but since we've never done any remodelling before, why can't we use laminate? It's a kitchen/living room so I wanted the same flooring throughout.

The budget is just for the kitchen units, worktops and sink. I have a freestanding washer and am buying an electric range (no fiddling about with adding gas hobs should keep costs down I think).

I don't know exactly how many units as I need to plan the new layout. Our kitchen is 2x3m max if that helps.

    Because you don't want this:

effect in a couple of years time resulting from the fluids that have been spilt on it or when it has been washed.

Is there any way to stop that happening?

Yes - you don't allow it to get wet and in a kitchen or bathroom thats impossible. OK the example image I posted is a tad extreme but even if you glue and seal the joints you still can't guarantee that this won't happen when fitted in locations that are inclined to wetness.

    Cheers.

  • Like all the other posts, you only get quality at a price. You say kitchen falling to pieces, is it just the doors that are falling apart? If the carcasses are good why not go for replacement doors.
I am currently looking to remodel my kitchen, called various names, Howden Lyndhurst, Valencia, MFI Woodrige in pale maple/birch etc and need a few new doors and drawer fronts. Exhaustive searches have found nothing so anyone with any ideas, HELP please
  • As mentioned, we're wanting to do more than just replace the doors.

We've just moved house. 7 Years ago we put in an IKEA kitchen and it was still going great guns... The worktop was rubbish but they have drastically improved the quality of the worktop since then. I kept my old appliances. We had a lot of units and the total was less than £1000 for the kitchen carcasses and worktops. I think they also have an interest free option on their kitchens at the moment - have been in there trying to get storage options for the new house. The only thing is - as someone has already mentioned there is no service gap at the back meaning you may need to move electrical cables, gas pipes - or be prepared to cut out holes in the carcasses but if you are prepared for that then it isn't a shock..

We've got a brand new expensive kitchen now but I really miss the practicality of my old IKEA one.

If you want to save a bit go for push button doors and don't put on any handles... If you want the clever storage ideas - buy them in a few months time - like the drawer inserts etc... I would Definitely recommend IKEA and their design software is pretty good too. Loads of choices over doors - you can mix and match and they look good.

Good Luck - hope you get it sorted.
