Oh - type I'm no help. When - if you give them a slight twist and they come away in your hand, they are ripe. If they are still attached then leave them a little while. I probably shouldn't admit it but my apple trees are named. Thug and Lady Jane. Thug is all warty and gnarled. He has scars and is covered in wooly aphids regardless of DH's attempts to drown them and him in repellant. He's like the kid in the playground that has the permanently grazed knees. He just sniffs and gets on with it. Lady Jane is completely different. 3 long elegant branches that sprout very early from the trunk in a very graceful pose. She hates being ravaged with the pruning shears and sulks. I don't feel that we are forgiven until she is covered in blossom.:p OK that's enough now or you'll all be calling for the men in white coats.0

I think it's quite normal. I have a birch tree called Helen after Helen Mirren as its' elegant and grey :rotfl:.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Phew - thought it was just me
Today I found some money in an account that I had sort of forgotten about. I also had my first blast of IPL from a groupon offer. I'm a little sceptical about the IPL and not sure what to do with the money. As always I could spend it ten times over, nice though :T0 -
Thanks so much Numpty.. at least i now know if we get it wrong-ish then i won't have killed them completely.. the apples are really plump now so i'll send OH out to have a little twist later, there's spiders on the tree so i can't  then i'll let him try them to see if they're cookers or eaters
It'll probably do them good to have a good prune as they've gone a bit wild, i think the previous owners have tried to train them (which i love, as it creates a neat garden) but they don't seem to have done it successfully. it may be that i just have chop a lot off and not get any fruit next yr..:o
Thanks for your time in typing all that out!! (also i've never had trees before, i didn't know you were meant to name them :rotfl:)Mortgage amount at 31/12/2011 £166,050 now £0 as at Sept 21 - 15yrs 4 months early.0 -
NSD yesterday and planned for today.
DH has a motorbike. We don't have a garage at the front of the house but at the end of the garden we have a large shed/workshop. At the moment we have an old concrete path running slightly off centre down to the shed. I want to get rid of the path but DH says we will end up with ruts where he gets the motorbike in and out of the shed. Anyone got any ideas? Possibly stepping stones that will be half obscured by grass inbetween?0 -
Suggestion , Buy a very small motor bike shed and put it by the house. More secure for burglary purposes and then no need for a path! I have tiny shed for my push bike which cost very little.
Enjoy the bank holiday,
Squirrel:jPaid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0 -
Thanks Squirrel. Unfortunately DH said no to bike shed. He's not precious but certain things get him going. The wooly aphids on the apple trees are the bain of his life and the bike is his other passion
So the face said it all when I got the tape measure out to see if we could fit a small metal shed to the side of the house. He also said that when I have a tape measure in my hand he gets nervous
He knows its going to end up in a job for him - wise lad.
Well it turns out we would barely get a shed there and we then would have to move the bike to take the garden rubbish out. So not quite workable let alone DH's reluctance.
We do have a second shed and I think we might have to re-arrange the current tennants (my wellies and the lawn mower) so that we can get rid of that path. I will have to appeal to his wallet. The path would cost a few hundred - moving wellies would earn him a cup of tea - simples!!!:rotfl:
We had a relatively good day yesterday. DH was up the ladder again and got a second coat on the back of the house. I did my bit cutting in both with paint and directional motivation - no, not moaning!!
Missed out on Olympic tickets last night. Stupidly faffed switching from 1 event to the other. Went through to seat numbers and everything. Couldn't decide and DH was pouting because he is working all through. Tried to find tickets for the 1 day he could do rather than the 5 I can. Ended up with nothing  Hey-ho.
Today I will be aiming to cut the grass before it rains. I also have to find the 2 spare beds - currently covered in STUFF - as Wandering Clouds (Sister & Nephew) come home Sunday from summer away and will need a bed for a couple of nights before they start off on their new life on the south coast. Really looking forward to seeing them :j0 -

Haha... more training required I think. My OH grabs a pencil and piece of paper and follows when I pick up a tape measure.numptyknownothing wrote: »We had a relatively good day yesterday. I'm also chief cutter inner! But once I've finished he hands over the roller for me to carry on...numptyknownothing wrote: »Today I will be aiming to cut the grass before it rains.
Hope you got the grass done. We've just had the mother of all down pours.MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.0 -
Yes - we did as well - I now have a very original look to the lawn short back, sides and a longer bit at the front! I carried on for as long as I could through the spots, then the light rain but the downpour beat me. Its my own fault for not getting on with it. The third cup of tea was probably one too far
I obviously have some way to go before DH will be at the pencil and paper stage. I have at least mastered the art of avoiding the baton passing otherwise known as the paint rollerat least outside. I do get left the the glossing though which I hate  No glossing outside yip yip yip.
Not a good month to come, just seen my payslip. Next month will be a challenge to save anything. The OP is safe as I include that in the DD every month
I have signed up for a couple of mystery shops next month. I am not doing it for the money more the motivation to get something done. My job is not very mentally stimulating so the questionnaires are giving me pause for thought. The more I do the more my brain will be trained to respond. We'll see. So just the signature to update and we're done. NSD today. Will be cooking a store cupboard favourite. Chicken and chorizo stew with couscous and veg. I've tweaked a Nigella recipe. Left over chicken from the roast I did yesterday. Comfort food, now that the rain has set in its just what I need.0 -
Hi Numpty...
Nevermind about the grass.
Dinner sounds lovely... which Nigella book is it in?MFW: Nov 2008 £156k, Jun 2015 £129k, Jun 2017 £114k.0
