I think it probably depends on why you've hit your low, as to what people might advise. I wouldn't avoid my GP though, if I really was very low.

    Talk to someone.

Whether that's your GP, a friend, your OH, family, the samaritans.... just talk to someone.

My advice would be, don't rule out the GP. It can be unbelievable how much a physical condition (illness, deficiency, reaction to current medication, etc) can have of mental health. For example, a mere bladder infection can cause dementia-type symptoms in the elderly that could result in them being put into a care home rather than on a course of antibiotics! Hypothyroid can cause anxiety and depression as well as physical symptoms (but not always both, so it can often be missed), a B12 deficiency can cause mental confusion, slowness, memory issues, etc.

My advice would be to rule out health conditions before tackling this, because no amount of dancing will treat a medical condition (well, there may be a few conditions it helps, but you get my point!)

I agree, if you really need help, they are a good place to start.

or maybe a counselling service like Mind (of course your GP could refer you for counselling)

Do one small positive thing every day - walk in the sunshine, offer to help a neighbour/friend in need, clear out one cupboard, do a random act of kindness for a stranger, on so on.

Depending on your condition, it can be twice to a hundred times as hard to do it without going the the GP.

The key is do you really want to, and are you willing to do what it takes.
It's like someone saying "I've broken my leg, can I get it better without going to the GP". And the answer if "Yes, probably, it's just a lot harder".

Dancing sounds like a flippant answer, but it is a good one if it's explained that it gets your body moving, and much needed endorphins in your body.

Exercise, decent regular food, socialisation, good quality sleep is the DIY version.

And then determine what is the problem yourself - medical condition, personality disorder, inaptitude dealing with the world, and then as you now know the problem, take steps to put it right.

That things get better. Just cling on to that.
