they don't actually block it though, because I've currently booked a delivery for 18th Sept and there's only about £3 in that account at the moment. I think they do a sort of test payment - sometimes my account shows a £2 payment going out but it disappears latereta - think this is just to confirm the bank details

Perhaps it is different with different accounts but with mine - Asda is a nightmare.
Say I order something for £50.00 - they "block" £50 on my account on the day.
Say they deliver and something was out of stock so the bill comes to perhaps £43.00.
They take the £43.00 from my account on the day of delivery AND the original £50.00 is blocked for several days so I have no access to my own money till it "drops off" back.
Happens every single time when I order from Asda. There were few threads about this weird thing on MSE forums so does not happen just to me...0 -
They do reserve the money. Once your order has been picked and they know how much it is gong to be, they reserve it, but only the day before delivery, once you have signed for it, your account will be debited, usually the next day. This is because you might give some items back to the driver that may need debiting. I know this happens, because i have online banking and can tell when its debited and can also see monies being reserved on my balance, but possibly different banks do things differently.0

The problem I have with them is that they take the amount as on delivery day from the account and then still hold the original reserved amount (from the time of ordering) sometimes for several days grrrrrrrrrrrr0

im not too sure about Asda, but Tesco i think do things differently, thats really bad if people need to access their money0

Had a bad day today. Made some truly unnecessary spends and have taken a chunk out of my budget. Feeling really deflated about that, but must press on with it. Guiltily adding another spend of £12.45.
Gutted.

The sage bread buns sound good, I must make a note of the recipe.
We have been away for a few days break and I am now rested and looking forward to the challenge of trying to see how far I can stretch our grocery budget. I arranged a food shop to be delivered this afternoon and it came to £31.86. I will update my signature shortly.
DH is still on holiday and so I will be popping in and out until Monday when I plan on getting to grips with menu planning etc.

That's why its different then, I've only every shopped once from asda (very small order) and didn't notice they'd blocked some of the account, must have been flush that weekall my dds etc go from another account so wouldnt have needed to access.
I've never noticed it with mrT or sainsbugs; thanks for the info - I'll be aware of it if I order again from asda... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
