Spider free honeymoon?!

Hi all,

Strange question but I am super terrified of spiders but looking at tropically places for honeymoon (carribbean areas/mexico/other 'idilyc' places) but they all seem to have big spiders!!

Can anyone recommend somewhere we can go like this with minimal spdiers?! i know I should just get over it but I genuinely won't enjpy the holiday if there are spiders around!!!

Thanks x

I doubt if you'll find anywhere that is tropical that doesn't have spiders and lots of other creepy-crawlies, those are the conditions that they thrive in, and they were there first! The only option I can think of would be a cruise, staying on board when it docks.

i have booked to go to carribean but cant advise on that yet. but i have been all over europe, canaries, egypt, etc and tbh i havnt noticed any . but then i am not looking for them either( except the bed before i get in it)
i have to say though, even in this country we have some quite large spiders so doubt you can escape them in any warm/hot country

I, too, am petrified of spiders but I've been to the Domincan Republic and didn't see one. We did stay inside our resort most of the time right enough (as there is absolutely nothing to do outwith!!). On one trip we came across a man who liked to keep a spider on his face, but each to their own!

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

I too didn't see a single spider in the Dominican republic, lots of wildlife (lizards, dragon flies, birds etc), but not a single spider.

I have been to Barbados a few times and never seen a spider yet...I am also terrified of them! I have seen lizards, monkeys and a cockroach  but that was in Bridgetown late at night on our first visit, never saw one again.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have been to St Lucia and Jamaica and did not see any! As another poster said plenty of lizards and other wildlife! Just make sure you shake your shoes before putting them on as scorpians are also common.

The only place I've ever seen a huge spider (or I think it was a tarantula actually  *shudders*) was in Cyprus - not even a country particularly famous for them as far as I'm aware! So you run the risk wherever you go!

I'd have though if you're staying in a decent hotel and you're not planning on wondering into the wilderness too much you would be as safe (as you can be!) wherever you go.

Oh and this thread has given me that itchy there's-something-on-me feeling!!
  • I too am petrified of spiders but haven't really seen many on my travels - I think Australia and the UK are the only places! I've been to the Maldives, Bahamas, Egypt, lots of places in America, Canada and lots of places in Europe and not encountered one.....lots of lizards, bats and frogs though in more tropical places!!

You're right... big furry ones. I got bitten by a somewhat smaller spider in Cyprus a couple of weeks ago. It still itches like the devil.

OP have you considered Iceland or somewhere similar? In my experience, anywhere remotely warm will have spiders.

My granddad had the skin of his cheek licked off by a very large spider while sleeping under his lorry in Africa (don't ask.)

Edit: I've noticed a link between big spiders and anywhere that grows bananas... like Cyprus and the Caribbean, for example.
