Has anybody tried this, one has said no and one yes?
Waitrose in EC1 now ask you to get a cup from customer services and pay or show your card! So you can't add the coffee to your totel bill.

From 9 February the free coffee etc goes - sign up now saying that a cafe purchase is required to get the free drink.

That's not an all-inclusive rule as far as I know, as I understand it:

If you want to "drink in" the cafe, you need to buy something, otherwise the takeaway is still free
Coffee from self serve machines is still free

Blimey, the self serve brew had better keep going or 98% of my building will defect back to Costa & Sainsburys....
Here's hoping they do the maths and decide us coffeemonsters are worth nuturing for the occasional sprees we go on.

According to the sign in my local Waitrose cafe today, from February 9th the free tea or coffee from the cafe will only available with a purchase from the cafe. Customers will still be able to obtain a free drink from the self service machines in store.

Clever of them to restrict the offer without removing it altogether. Disappointed but not surprised as it's always difficult to find a free table in the cafe and a fair proportion of people sit for ages with their free drink, reading the cafe paper (I include myself in that sometimes).

Be interesting to see if footfall changes now that the half price offers are coming to an end too.

Drinks from the self service machine will still be free but at our branch it takes ages to queue at the adjacent desk to get your card scanned as they are dealing with collections and enquiries as well

Confirmed, according to the sign I saw today. Chargeable in the cafe, without another purchase.

The self-serve stuff is not too good, though, I've found.
