Ah, means no free coffee for me: I'm lactose intolerant. I can't have dairy and unless they offer soya milk it'll be a black tea or coffee which really isn't so good. Shame. Was nice whilst it lasted even if I did only take up the offer once or twice a month. :(

You could always buy and carry Lactose free milk portion packs.
    Available in most supermarkets...

Yes the cost of coffee and paper count towards the £5 or £10 spend in Waitrose - to get the free paper

Ditto! Tend to do this on Saturdays only and when there are other offers on...

That's my shopping in Waitrose finished then.

Although my local has a cafe, I do not sit there and prefer to collect a take away latte from the cafe as I only like half a shot of coffee - not an option at the self-service machine.

The machine, incidentally, is right by the exit door and already blocks the exit of shoppers leaving the shop with their trolleys - hate to think what the extra volume of people awaiting their "take aways" will do.

Having on average shopped about 4 times a week at Waitrose over the last 3 years, I'm afraid it will be back to my local Tesco where I can get a decent latte in Costa. To be honest, the price difference in the two supermarkets will easily pay for my coffee!!!
  • from an email rec'd earlier from Waitrose.............

We hope that through observing this free tea and coffee etiquette, we can continue to offer a complimentary hot drink each time you shop with us.

    Free tea and coffee etiquette
    1. Become a myWaitrose member and shop with us a little (or a lot)
    2. Enjoy a free tea or coffee when you pop in for your groceries
    3. Swipe your myWaitrose card at the till

they may now expect you purchase something in the supermarket (not just cafe) before getting your free tea/coffee

Sadly not suitable for all of us who are lactose intolerant (including me :( - I have tried this already) but thanks for the though

(asked a few times) it mentions it in the ads and on the cartons/bottles too but isn't widely mentioned so not everyone knows but sadly isn't informed until it's too late!

This story is reported on in today's Times, where they say that you will be required to make a grocery purchase in order to get a free takeaway coffee. The cups will be given away at the checkout when you buy something and have your card swiped.

I think you will still be able to get a take-away from the cafe, the wording from Waitrose isn't clear but it does state if you want to enjoy a drink IN our cafe.....

You could always ask in the cafe if you can still get takeaway, does no harm to check in the store whether they can do it for you.

Also, half a shot of coffee? You might as well just have the hot milk with no coffee!

Technically, it isn't a free paper. The notices in store talk about getting money off your shopping when you buy certain papers, though I agree it amounts to the same thing.

They will most certainly see a drop in takings.

We would often when passing pop in for a coffee and always end up buying groceries etc.

I do not like the takeaway from the machines as it does not taste the same.

Will still shop there but expect will spend probably half of what we used to.
