Did you pay by debit or credit card. If so a bank statement is good enough as proof of purchase.

Not always, unless you only bought one item.

Otherwise how can you prove that £24.99 at Tesco that shows up on a bank statement included a pair of shoes and wasn't a grocery shop?

It would prove the date of purchase and tesco can easily identify the price of the item at that date. The problem is you could have numerous tesco transaction on different dates so it's difficult to prove what date the shoes were bought

Which is why you are supposed to keep your receipt, because it's proof you've paid for something.
  • I'm surprised they took such a customer-unfriendly approach. I wrote to Tesco customer services a few months back, complimenting them on their grocery delivery service ( I had used Asda for almost two years prior and they were absolutely dire in comparison). I did it purely because I thought good service should be recognised just as much as poor service, but they responded with a thank you letter and a £15 credit code. Did you speak to a Manager as perhaps the customer service man was just having a bad day?. We know consumer law - but most large retailers tend to err on the generous side to maintain customer relations. I returned two items to Tesco this week without receipts (they were duplicate gifts from family members for my daughter's birthday). I was given a giftcard for the value. I've found other stores such as Gap and Next to be just as accommodating.

Maybe i'll give them a call. I just needed to rant as i was so upset by the way he spoke to me. I didnt know whether i'd get a credit note or not so wasnt expecting one. However, i wasnt expecting to be spoken to like that either.

If you paid by card and show your bank statement, they can look it up on the computer system thing and retrieve a statement of items bought - so proof of purchase.
It's a bit of a PITA but it can be done.
Mind you to save all the hassle, I'd probably bung them in the wardrobe and find them later.
    Best wishes.

I really can't see what the problem is or what they've done wrong.

You'll find most if not all shops would do the same, if the item is faulty then any proof of purchase is enough and it would be dealt with but for change of mind a receipt would always be needed.

OP maybe you could have another good look to see if you can find the receipt hidden away somewhere

They can (or should be able to) search the electronic journal for sales on x date of x amount and it will bring up all transactions in pretty much exact copies of the receipt printed. Or search the item number for sales on that date. There's a million and one ways to search journals and get the right receipts up.
