Hi, only just got to coming back on here! All documents were from DL and in DL envelope. All legit. The broker sent me no paperwork at all. It all came from DL direct.
So the update, DL have called me back and after sending them an email explaining how I had no idea this had happened etc and that I was duped, they have voided my insurance from inception (08/11) as if it never existed but as I co-operated with them and that i now dont have to declare my voidance to any future insurers!
That is such a relief. I was so stressed its unreal. They have all the info of the broker so will investigate further! Now to contend with actual car and the repairs!
Thanks for all your help and advice guys!0 -
PS - Name of broker Shakia Ahmed, in London! DO NOT USE!0

I think you need to get in writing from Direct Line exactly what has happened.they have voided my insurance from inception (08/11) as if it never existed but as I co-operated with them and that i now dont have to declare my voidance to any future insurers!
If you believe that they have voided your policy and an insurance company in the future asks if you have ever had an insurance policy voided you would have to say "yes". If you say "no" you wouldn't be answering to the best of your ability.
It's not going to be much help to you, if you lie and get found out, that "Direct Line said it would be ok".
Chances are if they are saying you don't have to declare it as voided to future insurers that they aren't "voiding" the policy. Cancelling it, maybe? I don't know, but I think you should find out.0 -
Can I suggest that you report them, with as much detail as possible, to the FSA and trading standards.
Sounds like a grey broker.0 -

How much did you pay Shakia who I assume you found on gumtree ?
How much was the premium shown on the DL paperwork?
Sounds like he got you cheap Insurance with DL by giving your correct correspondence address hence you receiving paperwork but declaring your car was kept in a completely different address which happened to be a very cheap insurance area with DL. He then told you how cheap the premium was and charge you £100 I guess for doing this.0 -
OP, it may be a good idea to pass on Shakia Ahmed's details to Direct Line, so they can make further enquiries if they wish. You won't be the only victim.0

How the scam works is that the scammer just uses comparison sites and online sites to submit the application as if the individual was doing it. Direct Line or others wont even know that a third party is doing this. it is say no different from getting a family or friend doing it. Except you pay the scammer to do it.
Direct Line cannot do anything about it as they have no point of reference. Direct Line can really only refer up cases that involve those that are FSA regulated.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). They may well be able to trace the IP address or any email addresses used. Does the scammer pay the premium and recoup this (plus their "commission") from the client? If so, then the insurer will have bank or card details to go on, too. They would be able to find all policies using said IP address/email address/bank account, or whatever, and block them.0
