Orange pushing unsuitable Galaxy Mini 2?
My OH, who is self employed, got his first android phone a couple of years ago (from Orange can't recall exact model but it is a mid range Galaxy). He uses it for his business as he is on the move a lot.
It has taken a while but now he makes use of it in various ways, including using a couple of downloaded apps, internet access including uploading data (from a dongle), texting of course, and taking photos (it has a good camera) which he then Bluetooths onto his laptop to updates his facebook. Not games, he only uses it for his business.
He has a business account with Orange for the phone and separately a wifi dongle contract from Vodfone (I think) which was best value at the time.
His biggest irritation with the current phone is the size of the screen. He is a big man with big hands. Plus on the go he needs a large screen. A friend is developing a business app for him. So he wants something larger, both in terms of screen and capacity.
He was thinking of a Samsung Galaxy S3. Our son recommends a Samsung Nexus (not S to avoid the Orange crap which currently clutters up his existing phone).
In fact he is being pursued by 2 different Orange salesmen claiming to offer him "a good deal" on the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 - basically to swap his existing mid range Galaxy for a Mini 2. !!!!!!? He pointed out to the first salesman he was a businessman and wanted a larger phone and asked about the S3. The salesman told him it has issues so they were not currently recommending it and in any case many people found it too large. Bite me.
I assume the Mini 2 phone is not selling and the sales staff are being incentivised to shift it but it is an entry level phone - compact - mostly for kids. What is the point in trying to pass it off on a middle aged businessman?
Meanwhile anyone got any recommendations on what he should buy, apart from the above, and which company has best deals at present?

what do you expect, they're salesmen and just want to close a deal. frankly i wouldn't be surprised if they would sell you a frozen dog turd to use as a handset if you were mug enough to buy it0

Yes but why try to sell an entry level phone for teenagers as an upgrade to an existing business user who has expressed an interest to upgrading to an S3? Does not compute. They will make more money if he upgrades to an S3.0

It seems crazy they would push a phone that you'll get on a cheap contract compaired to a premium handset at 30 plus a month... Unless they want you to pay 30 plus a monthfor a Mini 2. What's the monthly budget for the phone it'll give us an idea of whether the Galaxy S III is likely... It might be that the monthly charge you are asking for won't get you the phone you want.0

Oh they may also be getting a hard sell over the phone... Whenever I ring a company I know exactly what I want and what deal I want it with... The second I get a hint of someone trying to change my mind I can sense a hard seller and find a way to end the call, whether appearing accidental or not. Generally I've found hard sellers to be overly enthusiastic and at times quite blunt... You tend to find they act as though they know what you want more than you do.0

"Unless they want you to pay 30 plus a monthfor a Mini 2"....I think that is exactly what they do want.
But why continue on that tack when he says he is interested in an S3 and that the Mini 2 is too small for him, and there is prospect of an upgrade in the offing? To the point of telling him S3 have issues and are not recommended by Orange at present.
He is currently paying £35 and anticipates £50ish particularly as his friend is developing a business app for him to run on it. But even if it is too dear, he would like some comparable figures. For example for an HTC Desire.
Above all he needs a larger screen.0 -
I suspect the Note might be ideal, if not exactly pocketable. The Note 2 is due to be launched on 29th August, which might lead to some very good deals on the original Note. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

OK salesman 1 called again (OH is being chased by 2 different salesmen, S1 from UpgradeYourOrangeMobile and S2 from the shop where he bought it).
Under duress S1 agreed he could have a larger phone if he upgraded to the Business Solo 30 plan. £30 month. He recommended the HTC One X or the Samsung 3. On the Solo 30 plan both are £30 month but the HTC costs £49.99 and the S3 costs £41.99
Solo 30 (24 months) offers 900 mins/100 texts, unlimited landlines, mobile browsing, free wifi.
S2 said they are not recommending Samsung S3 at the shop at present as they have had so many returns.
How do the HTC one X and S3 compare and also with the Note?0 -

How do the HTC one X and S3 compare and also with the Note?
The Note has a bigger screen than both with the HTC screen being the smallest of the three. The HTC has no memory card slot (if that matters) but both Samsungs do. HTC battery is not removable (so you can't carry a charged spare if that matters). Note has a dual core processor where others have quad core (faster). There's love in this world for everyone.
