£1.99 rechargeable batteries available in Lidl stores

What's the deal?

Starting Thursday 29 March, the budget supermarket Lidl will sell a range of rechargeable Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries for £1.99 in its stores nationwide. The promotion includes packs of 4 AAA, 4 AA, 2 C, 2 D or 1 9V block (PP3).

Considering rechargable batteries can cost around £10 online, if you have a Lidl nearby, these offer a tidy saving.

How to get them

Simply pop into one of Lidl's 400 UK stores. The batteries are only while stock lasts, so after locating your nearest Lidl, it's worth giving it a call to confirm there are plenty available.

Green MoneySaving

Not only do rechargeable batteries offer long term money saving, avoiding the need to be frequently replaced, but they're an environmentally friendly way to decrease pollution too.

Great price - but please can anyone tell me where to get a recharger for Ni-MH batteries OTHER THAN AA or AAA size? I keep reading that it isn't safe to charge these in my old recharger for NiCads. Any guidance much appreciated!

When buying rechargeable batteries it is important to check the mAH. The higher this is the more charge it will take and each cycle will last longer.

For AA, 800mAh is horrible! You want at least 1800mAh, I heard in a previous thread that the Lidl ones are over 2000. I'm going to pick up a couple.

Energizers are 1300mAh!!! There supposed 2 be the best!! The poundland 1s are great for remote controls and clocks which only use a little power. Obviously didgital cameras etc use better 1s

My Energisers are 2300mAh and were GBP 1.87 in the best Tesco battery sale ever, from a few years ago. I wouldn't recommend anybody purchasing NiMHs with less charge capacity than 2300mAh. NiMHs should really be at least 2500mAh these days. With NiMHs the heavier they are, the higher their capacity (usually;-).

The 800mAh batteries in Poundland are probably Nickel Cadmium batteries (Ni-Cads). Cadmium is deadly poisonous, and these 'el-cheapo' batteries should be outlawed IMHO. Ni-Cads potentially cause much more enviromnental damage that they prevent, especially as most end up in landfill in this useless country of ours ! Whereas NiMHs are much safer.

Aldi also do 4xAAs 2300 mAh NiMH batteries for GPB 1.99 from time to time. Although Aldi's 2xCCs at 4Ah at GBP 1.99 are very good value, for such high capacity batteries.
