It's perfectly true, they have absolutely no obligation to accept any offer from anyone.

They do not "offer" items for sale. They are merely advertised. It does not obligate the shop from accepting an offer from a customer at that (or any) price.

I agree that this was the unnecessary hard sell and it cost PCW a sale despite a reasonable customer. It does not, however, change the legal position or consumer rights of them, which this forum is concerned with.

You have absolutely no right to buy it as a single item if they do not want to sell it to you as one.

I bought one of my previous laptops from them about 8 years ago and had my dad with me - they took no for an answer then!

So are you saying if I went to the supermarket for tea bags and the cashier wouldn't let me have them without buying milk or sugar, I'd have to give in if I wanted my tea bags?
  • Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. You'd have no right to force them to sell you the tea bags on their own.

The alternative is you can force a private company to sell you their private property under your terms which is just not the case (the terms of a contract have to be agreed by both parties).

(Edit - SC replied while I was typing).

No, but you'd not be forced to buy - you could either accept their requirement or not bother with the tea bags. (i.e. same position as per the laptop).

This is the legality - the reality is that you probably got the wrong sales people/ wrong time ... perhaps they'd already met their targets and saw you as an easy mark, so not bothered about losing the sale.
  • Yep, their position does not make commercial sense. Any sale is better than no sale! Unless they have targets with add-ons as a % I cannot see a decent justification for refusing such a sale.

Edit: In conclusion PCW were bonkers to refuse the sale.

In that case, I'll hang on to my rubbish old laptop for a bit longer until I see something elsewhere that catches my eye!

    Thank you for clarifying!
  • Keep your eye on www.hotukdeals.com usually some good laptop deals posted there.

Edit: you may end up spending more than had you not found this website, there are always good deals going that are irresistible!

    what model were you after?

You might find its available elsewhere, but you've searched under the PC World product codes which tend to be specific to them to avoid them price matching.

I was wondering about reserve and collect... whether you have to pay online or in store. If you pay online then I'd quite happily do that.

I've actually got my eye on a particular laptop and I don't think John Lewis do it, otherwise I'd have gone with them because I've heard good things about them.

You pay instore when doing click and collect. Plus half the time they never even bother to reserve the items and a salesperson has to go off and get them so they still have the same opportunity to sell you extras.
