PC World forcing extras

Hi there

I saw a laptop online and went down to my local store to purchase it. I'm not exactly a novice when it comes to computers - I work in IT so I know more than enough to get me by. All I wanted was the laptop but the salesman insisted on picking up a bag, anti virus, cloud backup and the "whatever happens" guarantee. When we got to the till he gave me all the spiel... and despite me saying no to all of it on several occasions and stating that I was already covered for it all, he insisted on talking to me like I didn't know anything about it and then got ANOTHER salesman to come over and explain it all to me again. I politely declined his offer and then the original salesman tried explaining it to me again and then told me there would be a charge for them to set the laptop up for me with adobe, iTunes etc. I told him I'd like to set it all up myself which is when he began scanning all the products into the till despite me still declining. At this point I politely thanked him for his help and walked out of the store.

I don't understand why they think they have the right to force extras on people who quite obviously don't want them. I understand they have targets to meet but I can't help but feel slightly annoyed - especially when the salesman also had the cheek to ask me if I had a boyfriend! Does anyone have any tips on getting the laptop without having all these extras forced on me? I'd order it online but unfortunately work full time and can't have personal deliveries to work. And I don't see why I should have to waste a day's holiday waiting for delivery when I should just be able to walk into the shop and pick it up without any problems!

    You are totally within your rights to get it as a single entity as they do sell it as one. I also work in IT and love going in there and playing games with the mug salesmen, playing dumb and trying to foist things on you. Thing is they have no clue the majority of them and thats from experience.

    I would get their representative on here to give you a hand if they can.

    Thanks Transient. I can't handle them not knowing what they're doing, but being pressured by 2 salesmen at once at then being asked about my personal life isn't something I'd expect when I just want to buy a laptop!

    How do I go about getting their representative to help?

    Maybe reserve online and collect in store? As these are put in a cage at the front of the store or a separate section for you to collect from.

    Should be able to avoid the agro salesmen.

    Additionally 1.51% cashback through top cashback if you do it this way...

    That or go to John Lewis and get an extra year's warranty for free (the new HP envy's with HDD and SSD for under £700 are really quite smart...)

    I was wondering about reserve and collect... whether you have to pay online or in store. If you pay online then I'd quite happily do that.

    I've actually got my eye on a particular laptop and I don't think John Lewis do it, otherwise I'd have gone with them because I've heard good things about them.

    Sometimes a trick is to try and get the salesperson to reduce the price of the computer in exchange for buying the extended warranty.

    Get home, wait for the paperwork to arrive for the warranty and cancel it for a full refund, plus the money you have saved on the list price.

    That's the legality, however you adn we all know the OP was buying a unit that could be bought indiviually but was getting the hard sell.

    True*. But you also have no requirement to accept their insistence of all the extras, and OP did the right thing.

    *ish. If they offer an item for sale at a given price then they should honour that contract (without the extras) if someone offers the price they are asking.

    Things must be really bad at PCW if they're acting like this. I wonder how long before they go to the wall?
