anyone watching 'superskinny me' on c4??? it's supposed to show the negative sides of obsessive dieting and starving yourself, which it does (they r throwing up and tired, and putting themselves in danger) but i think it's disgusting as it's just showing young women (perhaps even overweight schoolkids) that starving yourself can and will make you thin! :( i dont think it's right. i think these journalists have got the right idea but are going about it the wrong way. one of them is had nothing but lemonade for a week, and lost 7lbs. it's not like it's expensive and celeb-based diet, kids or vunerable adults can do this at home and make themselves ill! it's a bit scary.

also, these women are crazy. i know they are 'dedicated journalists' but the second i felt half as bad as they do i would just say s*d it, pass me a ham sandwich!!! why cant people just be normal???

But seriously. When I joined here I was about 2 to 3 stone overweight. What worked for me was not going on 'a diet' so to speak.

Going on a diet is great. You lose weight by not eating bad things. You get down to your desired weight. You have acheived what you set out to do. So you stop your diet happy in the knowledge you're where you want to be. So what happens now? You start eating what you did prior to your diet. The same foods that made you put on all that weight in the first place. What happens? You put it all back on. Back to square one.

Losing weight (and maintaining a healthy weight) is a lifestyle change (just like becomign debt free). You need to address what you eat for the rest of your life and what exercise you do. You need to find a balance that works for you.

Don't deprive yourself of the things you like but have them in moderation. I hate reading how people feel they're 'a bad person' for having a bar of chocolate! Thats rubbish. Why shouldn't you have one? Just don't have 2. Or 3! (you know who you are  :p )

Also make sure you have 3 meals a day. Skipping breakfast won't make you lose weight because you are consuming less calories. If anything it will make you put on weight. Your body needs fuel to get it working in the morning. If it's not firing properly anything you consume will just get stored (and turned into fat) in anticipation for your body waking up. Which it won't.

Also reduce your portion sizes (something I struggled with). Apparently it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your head it's full. So you may eat for 20 minutes then realise your full as opposed to eat for 10 minutes, wait 10 minutes then realise you're full. Half the food consumed! ;)

And then there is exercise. You don't have to hammer the treadmill for hours at a time 4 days a week. Take the kids for a walk over the forest. Kick a ball around. Throw a frisbee. Go for a bike ride. You'll be improving the quality of your life and your families.

    Good luck everyone. :)

    Hi there count me in..

I'd just lost 6lbs (in 2 weeks) on low carbs and then got thrown when horseriding and broke my back. 10 weeks ago today.

Now trying to get fit enough to

    a return to work (4 / 5 weeks)
b WALK the race for life (4 weeks).

Had put a little back on but now back to the same as when I had the accident. But could do with the mutual support to continue. 18 lbs to go.....

Good luck to everyone out there trying to lose weight

SS is right, dont skip meals. Your body like he says, holds on to the food as fat. Drink stacks of water and clean your teeth if you feel a hunger pang coming on. Ive put on a stone and a half since september, mainly due to babby being born and having very little inclination to do any exercise. I go away in Jun and what I find is, if I have my 3 meals per day and cut out all the chocolate (supplement with an extra spoon of sugar in mi coffee) I will lose a hell of a lot of weight. Now when I go away it is very easy for me to get into a routine with exercise (cause there is nothing else to do to break the monotony) and that is the key with exercise, getting into a routine. The 1st few times are the hardest. This time when I'm away for about 9 weeks I will work out every day and it will consist of one day, slow fat burning jog on the treadmill, followed by press ups and 30 minutes of abs. 2nd day will be light weights followed by press ups. 3rd day will CV in the treadmill followed by weights and round and round again. Now if I stick to my food i.e. no rubbish I will come back easily 2 stone lighter albeit a bit paler. Now to keep this off I will go for 2-3 light jogs a week and play some participation sport. So, my challenge is now I am 82Kg and by the time I come back I want to be below 73kg possibly below 70 KG which will be my ideal weight. Lenny

Well it depends on the individual.

Bones and muscle weigh more than fat so it's hard to really say what an ideal weight is. You are much better of going by how clothes fit you, waist measurement etc.

Also get your doc to measure your BMI. Don't go by guides on the web coz they are next to useless because of the bones/muscle issue. This will tell you how much of your body weight is fat.

Also and most importantly, it's about how you feel. There is no point in trying to lose weight for someone else or you will more than likely fail. You should want to do it for yourself. What better reason for all parents reading this than to be able to see you children grow up and then to know your grandchildren and then watch them grow up. :)

True... thing is the weight itself doesn't bother me because although I'm 13 stone I'm tall with it so and am not massive by any means.. the thing that bothers me more is that I'm not toned anymore like i was before I had kids. I've got a vile saggy belly and big bum and thighs so think I'm going to concentrate on that rather than the actual weight loss..

Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches
