There is no internal 'wiring up' required for broadband, it just works on your existing line with a connection made at the exchange. A BT standard residential line install (whether it's charged at £130 or zero) will give you one NTE5 master socket at a point near the line entry point from the street. it will most certainly not get you any extension sockets, upstairs or down.
For any extra work or wiring/sockets beyond the master, BT OR will charge you at about £130 an hour. So if you want any work done beyond the master, get an independent in who will charge less than a quarter of that.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hi Macman I must admit they didn't want to do the upstairs bit he said they place the socket in a convenient place inside wll from street,so I said that's not convenient for me as I need it upstairs or I wont bother he then put me on hold and said they would do as I asked,saying that I will have to double check as I dont want it done in a shoddy fashion with wire travelling up my stairs etc and very visible, when virgin came they put a box on the front of my house and then trailed it round the side of my house then up exterior wall and in to my bedroom.0

You will not get a 'free' extension included, though they might run it straight into an front upstairs room if it's fed off a pole. Bear in mind that these promises are being made by BT Retail, which has nothing to do with the installers, BT OR-an entirely separate company.
Unless you get this guaranteed, you'll find that OR charge BTR for the extra work involved, and they'll try to charge it on to you.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have recently moved from Virgin Broadband to BT Broadband, I used the MAC code provided and yet I was still being billed by Virgin even though I cancelled 3 months ago. Virgin sneakily stopped emailing my main account and increased the price of the service they were providing resulting in having to pay charges with my bank.
BT say they DID use the MAC code otherwise their Broadband service would not be running! Please help me with this issue as I don't know what to do...0 -
Virgin broadband-do you mean VM cable or Virgin National (ADSL)?
As stated above, a cable to ADSL transfer does not use a MAC, as an entirely new phone line is required. If so it's up you to cancel the old service. Did you not cancel the DD once you had received the final VM bill though?No free lunch, and no free laptop

I moved from BT ADSL broadband to Virgin Media cable broadband after 6 years with BT.. After six years of fairly trouble free service for no apparent reason the broadband stopped working. I had stupid script conversations with BT call center every day, they were starting all the checks from the beginning instead of resolving the ongoing problem. So I was sitting and talking over the phone the same thing evey day.. such a waste of time. I had a few Home Hubs, none worked (they all worked in my next door neighbour's house when tested them all). I had a few engeneers in my house and they couldn't find where the problem was. After a month without internet switched to different provider and I will NEVER go back to BT and their ADSL broadband.
BT customer service is so bad that in the scale 1 to 10 I would give them 0. And their engineers don't deserve to call themselves engineers because that word brings some value... they are just cable fitters.0 -
Well that explains it. I moved from Virgins ADSL service to BT Infinity; I was unaware that a MAC code was not required for this and was led to believe it was. Nonetheless I should of cancelled my DD even if I stopped receiving emails from VM. To move to another provider VM said it would cost £26 unless I used a MAC code, I'm £61 out of pocket with no one to point the finger at but myself. Be warned.0

I received feedback from BT who say they have used the MAC code and that Virgin are at fault. I'm going to write to Virgin Media but I would like any advise that will get them to take me seriously as I have a feeling that they'll just brush me aside. Thanks.Well that explains it. You do need a MAC for an ADSL to ADSL transfer. It was not clear from your original post if you were on cable or ADSL.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for replying as it's difficult to find a similar post. I moved from VM ADSL to BT Infinity, BT HAS confirmed that it did use the MAC code I provided but VM are saying it HASN'T been used.
VM have been charging me for the service since and are requesting me to pay having cancelled my DD with them. On top of this they are asking for a £24 disconnection fee!
Any advise on this would matter would be grateful. Should I just pay VM for a service I'm not using to prevent the bill from getting any higher?0
