switching from virgin media to bt

Im going to switch from virgin to bt for my internet and phone has anyone got previous experience of this I just use my pc for surfing the web and my son plays simple online games so could anyone advise me as to whether the 10g monthlky usage would be enough for us we never download films or music, but we can spend hours surfing.
I'm not sure if I will need a MAC code I assumed that the BT man would come and connect some new wires but if I need a MAc code it appears that bt will be using my currentvirgin wiring just like when you change a gas supplier but maybe I have got the wrong end of the stick.
we where with Bt 10 years ago so we do have a socket in situ

I do not want a wifi connection can anyone tell me how this works do BT send equipment for customers to operate a wired connection?

To get a BT ADSL service you will require a working BT-based landline at the property, have you factored in this cost? If you are currently on VM cable then a new line must be provisioned or reconnected-VM's cable network is entirely separate and canot be used for ADSL broadband, so your existing connection will be redundant.
A MAC code is not required for cable to ADSL transfers, it applies to ADSL to ADSL transfers only.
All the BT Home Hubs can be used wirelessly or by ethernet.
You may or may not be able to retain your exsting number, you'll need to check with BT.
PS: why use BT when you can get exactly the same service from Plusnet for much less?

Are you sure about that? BT's rack rate is £130 for a new line provision or reconnection. You can get that discounted only by locking yourself into a long contract.

Hi Macman it's a 12 month contract for free fitting,I'm not worried about that though I have been with Virgin for about 8 years so I'm not a frequent switcher so 12 months is not a problem

Just read your thread. I did just this 3 months ago (virgin to BT). Yes i did have to get a phone line put in but it was free and I paid upfront so I got line rental for £10 and free BB for first 5 months I think it was. Overall forgetting the free 5 months, it worked out just 50p cheaper for me to move. But at least I will hassle free from Virgin.

oh and so far I have been very impressed with the services from BT

when I switched virgin to bt, virgin don't play ball with phone numbers. In the end I lost it
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Free 'fitting'? Are you referring to a new line provision or a broadband install? BT broadband is not installed by BT, it's a self install package, unlike VM cable broadband. So no install charge would apply anyway.

I went the other way, BT to Virgin. BT were great until we had an issue then they were absolutely diablolical. Beware.
