You really seem to maximise the make do and mend, and something is better than nothing attitudes.
totally opposite to the 'must have it now' brigade.

That is actually not allowed by the rules of Freecycle.org
Only new members and those who have created problem post etc are moderated.
sometimes its a problem with Yahoo that causes the problems with emails etc. Its very possible that the details have been sent by email but that they are slower updating the site. It isnt necessarily anyone doing anything they shouldn't.

Well, it may not be allowed but that's the case in the group I belonged to !!! I was a member for several months - offered several things, and did nothing wrong whatsoever. Who do I complain to? Or maybe each group owner/moderators have control over their rules. I currently am the co-owner of a Yahoo group, and moderator on another one - we can change the settings as we wish e.g. moderating new or all members, prevent people from posting, prevent file attachments etc. By the way, the groups are nothing to do with Freecycle!

the trouble is with this is that the system could very easily be abused. As someone said earlier about her/his brother suggesting a fake "offer".
It has indeed been suggested and looked into. When something is given freely it isnt quite the same situation as something being sold. Who is to say whether the item left outside for the collector is better than the person being home to hand it over(and recieve thanks) etc. Freecycle giving is done completely "without strings" and any reward system would somewhat change this. When you give it is for no reward whatsoever. So no 5 stars, 100% feedback or anything else. If a member lets you down or is rude, the best thing you can do is to alert the mod. If everyone did this, the member could then be dealt with.

There are two options: You can complain to the mod/group owner or you can complain directly to freecycle.org.
I think its info@freecycle.org-I will check it out for you! I go by the rules and I expect others to do the same. That is what they are there for-to set standards.

    Yes-just checked-it is indeed info@freecycle.org
If you contact them, state you are in UK and the group you belong to.There is a piece in our "mod manual" which actualy specifies this rule but I wonder how many mods have read it.

Some rules are adaptable to the group. That particular one is not.

Thanks very much for that. I edited my previous post by the way, to add in a bit more info.

Yes Pam Yahoo groups work that way-I could also moderate all of my members. I don't though-its agains the rules. It also makes a lot more work and all in all groups just do not need that with Freecycle. You get members to follow the rules and only pull them up if they fail to do so. I always think its nice when i see properly set out posts which have already got posted by the unmoderated members. A bit like teaching someone to cross the road and then one day you see they are safely doing so on their own. We are not policing the group after all. Well I dont think of it that way. Also, we are taught to "let go" of it in a sense-the group is not something belonging to a person it is a group belonging to a community. All I do is to help it gel toether well.

If a mod is asking for the item you know anyhow, by the yahoo id or username so ultimately, it is the choice of the person giving.

Not where I live. I am a member of a few local groups, some list member and mod names some don't.

On all the groups I've been on you only have to type ADMIN into the search box and hit return to find all the posts sent out by the mods.
This gives their names and/or userid and/or email address (partially hidden for protection)
I know who all my mods are.
