if you don't ask, you don't get ...... if you do ask, you might get.
on the other hand you might just astonish people with your cheek.

I had seen a wanted for a digital camera and today saw the received. It can happen. no idea what spec camera they got but they did say many thanks and that they were very grateful, so good on 'em.
also seen a wanted for battery cover for phone, it made me laugh because I dropped my phone the other week. cover went one way, battery went the other.
So there was I, in the middle of tesco car park in the rain groping under cars to get the bits back:o . didn't need to post a wanted though.

In our current climate of "I need" "I want" etc, I have a cunning plan. I will e-mail Camelot and say I really need to win the lottery, say next Saturday. What are my cheeky chances? :D:D:D

or, as contained in a message the mod of one of my groups sent out not too long ago, you might get a name/reputation and people will give you a wide berth.

Quoia's friend certainly seems to like the idea of getting the lastest technology.... doesn't like the idea of paying for it though ? Wii, Razr, bluetooth

    ...................

I don't disagree - I've occasionally asked for things (not with regards to FC) in circumstances where one normally (probably) wouldn't do so. Often I quote the "If you don't ask, you don't get" bit, almost as a sort of disclaimer, even "an apology", which often puts whoever you're asking "at ease", and allows them a "comfortable" way to refuse . I always ask calmly and politely, don't take it personally or think it unreasonable when my request is refused, still thank them for even considering it when I'm turned down. If I'm successful, even if only partially, offer profuse gratitude and thanks.

With regards to the digital camera - I have no issue with this request - it's not as though they asked for 6 or 10 mexapixels etc.
I own a top Canon digital SLR that cost £600+ just over a year ago. Then again I bought a 5mp Vivitar compact with optical & digital zoom for under £30 only a couple of months ago.

Similarly I've seen minature & keyring type digitals on sale for £5 to £10 at loads of places - the pictures from these are excellent providing you don't want huge enlargements, and these are perfect for email attachments (or eBay) because the image has a relatively low file size.

(I could take 1 photo with my Canon on it best picture setting and attach it to an email, but when it arrives in your inbox, you might not be too happy that it is over 12 megabytes in size !!)

My first digital camera was bought secondhand over 10 years ago, cost £60, has a color LCD screen on the back, only does 320x240, only has 16 meg memory (non removable) and when it's full (24 pictures) all you can do is find the nearest PC to download them. Doubt I could sell it on eBay for more then £5 if that.

If I didn't still have a use for it I can see it would be ideal FC material and would be perfect for someone somewhere with a minimal requirement.

As far as LAPTOPS are concerned I again think a wanted request is perfectly OK, provided very high specifications etc. (ie pi$$ taking) are not part of it. (Not sure about most of the reasons WHY - disabled children, illness etc..)
Much of the reason I say this is that I've been looking to get one myself. I've not posted a Laptop Want on FC but have reponded to several offers. I've nearly bought one on a couple of occasions. My justification that laptop wants are OK, is that I've had an avid eBay interest for the last few weeks, whilst trying to find one for myself.

In the last month, without travelling more than 10 miles from home, I could have bought LITERALLY DOZENS of laptops for under £50. All fully working, all suitable for Internet (inc. broadband and even WiFi with suitable card), Word, Excel, Powerpoint, emails etc. Some of them of significantly better spec than the Acer laptop (Win 98), provided by my company, I had 9 years ago that did all these things and loads more (audio, video, business applications and engineering diagnostic functions for network faults).

Many of these laptops were well under the £50. The cheapest running Win95 went for 99p, a couple sold for £2 to £3, several more under £5, some others sold for just £10. I'd say half of those dozens & dozens sold for under £30.

Given the quantities, prices and hassle and cost of eBaying, I could quite see many others just being dumped, and somewhere like FC being the ideal place they should go.

Incidentally my "furthest" local board had 2 laptops offered this very morning. Both were what I would consider (knowing what my 9 year old Acer could do) "very" high spec Pentium 3 machines - obviously they went very quickly.
The TAKEN post for one of them mentioned that he had had over 800 requests for it !

Welcome back all you funny posters, I was a bit worried this thread wouldnt be funny any more, but  wahey here you are :j :j :j

On the issue of wanted posts, if you go on Bedford freecycle it is mostly wanteds, the occasional offered (snapped up and gone in seconds)and very rarely recieveds (with thanks). The same people tend to offer and everyone else just seems to want, want, want. The trouble is, the offered stuff is gone in a flash (specially the tvs) so what choice is there?
