Hi
My wife will not be returning to work after her maternity leave ended last month, we have just applied for tax credits to soften the blow of losing her income, are there any other benefits my wife can apply for, or isit just the tax credits we are entitled to!?
Many Thanks

No other benefits other than Child Benefit unless your income dips low and you are entitled to income related benefits.
What is your salary?
She *may* be entitled to contrubtion based JSA as long as she is looking for other work even part time. If she isn't looking for work then this may not be an option as she would have to sign on and be actively looking and they would ask why she left her old job.0 -
depends do you work for yourself or are you employed ?0

Thanks for replies.
I work roughly 32 hours a week and rough pay is about £18000

Then no you will not get anything other than CTC and Child Benefit unless she is seeking part time work and can claim Job Seekers (£71 pw for 6 months maximum).
They will expect her to sign on, actively seek work and to attend any training (if any) they desingate as part of her agreement.0 -

I do not mean to sound harsh but why do you believe your wife should be able to give up work and other taxpayers should instead be given the task of supporting your choice to have a child? Surely your financial situation is something you discussed when you planned to start a family? Why is that decision anyone else's responsibility but yours?DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

if you read the posts ,the lady in question has decided not to go back to work , which meens previos to this she has contributed her tax , ni , so why are you stating other taxpayers are paying for her ? and maybe in years she will decide to go back to work again and again contribute .0 -

The fact that this lady has paid tax and ni in the past is irrelevant. When she was paying it, she was paying if for the benefits etc, etc at the time.
So other taxpayers, who are paying tax etc now are the ones who are paying for benefit claimants and everything else that comes out of taxes.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I see the tax and N.I I pay as a safety net for the future. I assumed other people did too? If I ever had to claim benefits I would consider that I had funded it myself out of the fortune I have been taxed my whole working life.
You don't know this lady's situation so perhaps you should not be so judgemental.0 -

Benefits are a safety net for when you have no alternative, not for lifestyle choices.0
