Bindweed, anyone dug down deep?

I buy concentrated glyphosate from the garden centre. Are you saying that even when used neat, it is naff?
Ah see my error meant to say end result, no weed...., not infer the weed won. My brain typed it unfortunately my fingers didn't:D
No, I saying that when you buy the stuff in satchet form and mix as per the instructions it's naff. Make a paste or gel out of it and it works, but a dam expensive way to do it.
You may rember a few years ago when glyphospate 1st became available it was sold in a plastic pot with a brush inside the lid. That was gel form, you simply painted it on target plants and weeds.
But H&S has gone over the top once again imho, I bet you can't even buy that anymore?
Even the stuff in satchet comes double wrapped and in a water soluble bag and that's less than 1/4 the strength of the stuff I now buy.
What do you mean by concentrated? the stuff I have is Rosate 36.
It contains 360g/ltr of glyphosate acid in the form of 480g/ltr glyphosate isopropilamine salt and polyoxythyleneamine.
And yes I did look that up:o:o:oI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I've been fighting same battle in one of my borders this year. I have generic glyphosate (which I dilute as per instructions for deep rooted weeds/saplings etc). I cut lots of sticks from old bamboo canes, each to about 12" and I collected lots of plastic milk cartons. Each little shoot that came up I stuck a cane by it and allowed it to climb up. After about a week, there as plenty of leafy growth. I sliced the bottoms off the milk cartons, took the cap off and pushed them over the cane into the ground (protecting nearby plant) making sure the cane was inside the bottle. I sprayed the glyphosate inside the open top, then put the lid back on. Didn't matter that it rained that night, still killed off almost all the bindweed in one go.0

Small pots of glyphosate, that's the way to go. I use the small mustard/jam pots you get in B&Bs. Fill them half full with glyphosate, and poke the weed in using tweezers. Damage it slightly (it encourages growth that way, and you want that) and leave as many "heads" in the pot as you can - and leave them for several hours to drink their fill. Once done, pull them out of the pot, but leave them otherwise undamaged. Never pull them up or, worst of all, try digging them out.
The juice in the pot can be reused a couple of times, but best renewed after that. The bindweed will look healthy for a day or two, but then just die back, as will any connected plant within a foot or so. I used this technique in thios garden - nearly an acre, using only twelve pots. By the second year, it was virtually clear. Works well for other persistent, rooty weeds, bramble and ivy wither wonderfully!
Best to keep glyphosate off your hands, even though it is non-toxic. I use tweezers to load/unload the weed. Rubber gloves just get too sweaty!0 -
I've cleared a lot of field bindweed from a long herb bed, but there are still some deep roots. This evening I placed an upturned flowerpot over some new shoots, to stop it photosynthesizing (and nourishing the roots). Once there is some length visible, I'll soak the ends in glyphosate. I must admit the glyphosate I have is not so good, the bramble laughs it off. Time to use it neat, and buy the good stuff.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

I used Round Up on many persistent weeds when I moved. The garden had been left and we had weeds like bind weed, thistles, brambles and ground elder. Sometimes need more than one application but I bought the concentrated stuff from the garden centre (about £25 a bottle) but has lasted me 3 or 4 years. Mostly used in 1st application. I sprayed it with a garden sprayer.
If you spray it on, do it on a dry day when it's not going to rain for a couple of hours (I know not easy) but then be patient. Just when you think it's not going to work after about 2 weeks they the weeds start to look ill.0 -

They won't laugh of Rosate 36, £13/ltr off ebay.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I used the jar trick with some hedge bindweed and it looks very sick now. I suspect it has done the trick.
But it does not touch the field bindweed, too little foliage compared to root. I dug out ~1 m3 of soil last night, and filled a bucket with field bindweed. There was not much to see at the surface. Some root coils expanded to 2m long. Clearly these are storage organs, and a smear of glyphosate on a few leaves won't touch them. I think the only way to deal with this field bindweed is to dig out the bulk of the root, most is less than 1m deep, and then dig out remaining bits when they produce above surface leaves.cyclonebri1 wrote: »They won't laugh of Rosate 36, £13/ltr off ebay.;)
360g glyphosate per liter, cripes. I bought some from the garden centre which has 120g per liter. Time to order on ebay.
Any idea how toxic this is to normal plants? By that I mean if the soil around bindweed is damp with Rosate 36, would it percolate through the soil and kill wanted plants 4" away say?Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Pretty flowers though. And if, you know, your history...0

I don't know yet, only bought the stuff a month ago, but so far it has killed everything I wanted to kill.
Under the hedges every thing I sprayed died, docks, nettles and brambles etc, hedge unaffected.
As a trial I dropped a few ml ltrs on a dandelion in the lawn and the result was a burn out of only 4" dia, maybe that's a guide for you?
But the detailed instructions are fascinating, including how to kill shrubs and trees by injection:eek:
Details of how to dilute for max effectiveness against general garden weeds are sketchy. I used the same dilution ratio for this stuff as the weaker garden centre version, may be able to dilute much further, but I'll have to wait as all the weeds are dead:D:D
