Bank Charges Paid Twice?

Hello All.

Odd question but has anyone had their bank charges paid back twice?

  • Yes I have. NatWest paid my £1170 in February and then in March I received letter saying ' Our charges are legal but' and on page 2 'but as a gesture' so I signed it and sent it back. On 14th March they deposited £1170 but on 16th withdrew £1170. I didn't really expect two payments but knew if they did they weren't stupid enough to leave it in!

    Hi All

I dont know what to do! I have been battling my bank now for 8 weeks and finally they decided to give me my full charges back of £1.829 pounds!

All i had to do was send back the letter in the prepaid envelope, now,

i did send back the envelope in the prepiad envelope agreeing they refund my charges but i thought, i know, they will say they never received it and delay me getting my money back eve longer

So i photocopied the acceptance form and sent that back recorded delivery too! now they cant say they have never received it!

Well 2 days later, £1,829 pounds appeared in my bank! i am well happy but wait something else happened...

3 days after that, they deposited the same amount again! they have refunded me twice! now 4 days later they still havent taken it back or done anything about it!

what do i do! am i allowed this money as it s there mistake?

I was going to close my account anyway as i now bank with another bank, can i close the account and if so can they legally ask for it back seams as it was there error? especially if my ccount is closed?

hit me back with your thoughts...

Keep the account open for a bit longer but stay quiet about their mistake,if they dont ask for it back say within a month, pocket the cash, close the account and your in luck.

I'm guessing this is NatWest and yes they most certainly can ask for it back and will do. This is a mistake and the money isn't yours to keep.

I'd personally leave it about 2 weeks, and if no one asks for it back, then close the account and the money is yours

Are these the same people who call banks dishonest?
Somehow, pot and kettle spring to mind.

The Bank will eventually notice their mistake and ask for it back. I wouldn't touch it personally.
They took my signature away!!!!

Hi, and well done on successfully claiming your charges back, but PLEASE do not touch the money that they put in there by mistake. Believe me, the bank WILL notice their mistake, be it next week or next year - this sort of thing happens all the time. It's actually illegal for you to spend the money, whether you pay it back or not. And claiming that you didn't notice it in your account will not work, as it is not considered a reasonable defence. Once the bank realises their mistake and that you have spent some or all of their money, they are very likely to prosecute.
I know it's tempting to spend the money, but the best thing for you to do is inform the bank of their mistake as soon as possible, and let them take back the extra payment they gave you. If you want to avoid trouble, it really is your only option, because it's absolutely inevitable that they will discover their mistake for themselves at some point.
