What do you think of this now received item? Supposedly "brand new".

  • They don't need painting. To buy them from Daihatsu would be £176.10 + vat although I would be able to pick them up from a local dealer.

In the ad they were stated as brand new, now if something is stated as brand new I assume it is in perfect condition. Maybe its not been on a vehicle but 5 years off knocks and scrapes is a far cry from being new in my opinion.

When I said they were hard to find I meant locally, if looking nationwide they are available although then include P&P.

    What would others do?

    Thanks

Should I post some pictures of the marks/scrapes etc?

  • Have you emailed the seller to see what they say about the marks and scrapes?

I have noticed the seller is also breaking ebay rules with this comment at the bottom of their selling page -

    "Seller's payment instructions
WHEN PAYING BY PAYPAL PLEASE ADD 3% TO HELP COVER PAYPAL EXCHANGE FEES. THANK YOU"

The vibe I am getting from this thread is you have had (as I stated earlier) some buyers remorse and are looking very critically on your purchase (whether justified or not I do not know)

Well put them in the post and send them back to him asking for your money back. I assume you paid via PayPal.

Only you can decide what to do!

I agree...to me, it looks like the OP has had a grudge regarding this purchase from the moment he won it.
  • From the moment I had won the item I was surprised by the price the auction went to and probably overstated this aspect in my original thread however for brand new items then I would have been happy with the two bumpers that I bought. I paid a little more for the front bumper however the cheaper price I got the rear for compensated with the collection costs being spread over the two. I was going to collect as the ebay distance was 105 miles although later I found it was 145 miles over A roads.

Another benefit was that I could look over the other Daihatsu items that the seller had. After speaking with the seller in respect of collecting them he said he didn't have any other Hijet parts for my model. This coupled with the extra distance I decided to get them posted. I'm surprised he didn't mention the scratches/scrapes as they are very obvious especially as I was originally going to collect and would meet him face to face.

Hintza your cynicism has been evident in every post you have made in this thread. I don't think it is relevant. My initial problem was regarding whether shill bidding was going on, which you said you couldn't care about. This is the same as an auctioneer taking bids of the wall and I certainly do have a problem with that. I expect that your predominetly an ebay seller as you seem to be very drawn to the seller side of the argument.

Maybe I should have posted a new thread after receiving the bumpers but I didn't like to stick in a new thread although it may have been better because it could have been taken on the facts rather than with buyers remorse which has been mentioned and repeated by posters.

They were stated as "brand new" and "only out of the packaging for the photos" yet when I received them they were scrathed and scraped. Now they probably haven't been fitted to a vehicle but their age of 5 or 6 years is certainly not brand new. If they were in perfect (or nearly) condition I wouldn't care about their age. However this age is a relevant piece of information because over this period of time they have suffered these scratches and scrapes which would be reasonably expected of 5 years in storage.

Because of the condition they were miss described I wouldn't have bid the maximum bid and I reasonably expect neither would the other bidders. This misdescription has inflated the price beyond what would have been achieved if they had been accurately described. So YES I feel hard done to, and I think rightfully so.

    What options do I have?

    What would you do?

I'd appreciate your responses particularly those that don't reiterate buyers remorse. I have emailed the seller and I'm awaiting the reply.

    Thanks

I might be cynical but let's look at a couple of points.

When you bid it must have already been sitting at £71 you bid once late and high which is the correct procedure. Bidder 2 had placed there bid 3 hours before you and their bid was £101. You obviously bid a bit more than that. So if there had been shill bidding it in no way affected what you were willing to pay. So I don't see how you can even have an issue there.

Second point, you don't think the item is as described that really is your call. Although I don't know these models I would have assumed the bumpers should/could be painted but again that is your call. From the photos it doesn't appear to have any blemishes (but photos can be a bit misleading). If you feel strongly enough you should raise a claim that item is not as described and assuming you paid via Paypal then follow the instructions they give you. You will have to return it at your cost but you should receive your purchase price and carriage costs back.

If as I suspect you want a partial refund you can always approach the seller and ask him for one, he might even give you one. If he is unwilling to do so then you can go back to a full claim via PayPal.

From what you have said you have picked it up at 50% of retail price so in my book that would be fine.

From a buyers perspective I bought a damaged car that I have repaired it had front offside damage I bought it unseen and paid my money. Having recently completed the project it the car now needs a new gearbox but in my book tha is the risk I take. I couldn't expect the seller to forsee this and although this extra cost has made the project uneconomical I just have to put it down to experience.

I personally think you should ask yourself if your expectations were too high, only you can answer that.

I might not be telling you what you want to hear but all I am trying to do is give you my advice. The great thing with advice is you can choose to ignore it!

i think you should let the seller know that you are disappointed in the condition and tell him that had they been described correctly then you would not have bid as much or might not have bid at all so would appreciate compensation or a refund (if that's what you want)

if the seller is not willing to cooperate then started a paypal not as described dispute
  • Hintza Thanks. Your now getting constructive.

When I first posted it was for advise about shill bidding. I don't/didn't know what it looked like. I still find the first two bids dubious although there is now nothing i can do about or even show the history of the first bidder. So hopefully this can be left in the past.

When I bid I was surprised by the price it was going to ( I hoped it would go for less). My maximum bid just nicked it by £1 or £2, I based my maximum on the auction info that it was "A BRAND NEW FRONT BUMBER SUITABLE FOR DAIHATSU HIJET OR PIAGGIO PORTER RANGE OF VANS" i.e. brand new. If something is brand new then I expect it to be in perfect condition, would you expect something different?

Now it was at least 5 years old, now this is not brand new although if it was in perfect condition I'd be happy. I'm highlighting the age of it because that suggests how easily it could have been damaged overthat period of time even if looked after (Probably in garages/warehouses).

The seller emphasises the newness by "IT IS UNUSED AND ONLY TAKEN OUT OF THE PACKAGING FOR THE PHOTO", this may actually be true but then how would the damage occur if it was always wrapped in bubble wrap?

Because of the misleading information it led me (and I fully expect the other bidders) to overvalue the item. In reality it is not brand new but over 5years old, neither can it only have been out of the packaging.

I don't think your car example is relevant as it was bought as damaged, I bought this as brand new. If you bought a car as brand new and it had scratches and scrapes on it then I don't think you'd be happy even if you bought it unseen but based your reasoning on it being brand new and unused, only taken out of the packaging for the photo. These items aren't reallt comparable because of their nature but regardless of the product and it was described by the two details this has then I think you'd be unhappy, and rightfully so.

I've paid over 50% of the retail price but I was paying a premium for it being brand new which is not true for the two reasons stated. If it was advertised more accurately then my valuation of it( and my maximum bid) would be less. This lower valuation would then have made breakers yard options much more attractive and a better alternative especially now as their condition would be more comparable, I could then compare them like for like rather than paying a premium for a new product and not supposedly worrying about its condition.

If I could choose a solution it would be a partial refund. I'm not an experienced ebay user and so don't know my options or possible procedures. So I would apprciate advise?

    Thanks
