    When they're born? For christmas? If they go to uni? Do you get on with their parents? Do you live near them? Will you see them often?

    Assuming you mean when they're born?

    My Dad bought us (slightly in advance) the cot and changing table set. We passed it on to my brother when he (and SIL obviously!)had his children, so it's been used by all the grandkids :)

    My mil bought us a pram and my mum got us the cot. Our DD wasn't either of their's first grandchild but was our first child.


    Dad got us a steriliser as he didn't have much money.

    Whatever you can afford will be appreciated, why not ask them what they need and pick something you can afford?

    I bought the pram - which will hopefully do all the grandchildren. I knitted/crocheted a bunch of toys.

    One good item my daughter bought for her son was a hundred year journal which she is keeping for him until he is old enough to take over.

    I'm waiting for my first grandchild to be born and I'm sorry to admit that I will buy him anything he needs. I can't help myself. In fact I've probably already bought him stuff he doesn't need and he isn't here yet. Not very MSE but I seem to have lost my common sense :happylove.

    However being sensible :o between the grandparents we have divvied up and shared the cost of the pram and parafanalia that comes with it and the cot and nursery furniture. The big stuff I suppose.

    Oh and I've started knitting again.

    I bought my first grandchild a freezer. Her mummy and daddy had already bought everything a baby needed. They resisted the idea as they had to store it in their spare bedroom, tiny, tiny kitchen. However they now acknowledge that granny was right in insisting they had a freezer:rotfl:

    As a present for the baby, I'd suggest soemthing "nice" to "put on a shelf in their room, when they have one". E.g. a snowglobe, musical jewelry box, photo frame. As well as lots and lots of your time!

    As a present to help out the parents, I don't believe there is anything that certain people "should" buy. So buy what you think is appropriate that your child would like you to buy. As well as lots and lots of your time!
