It totally depends on the relationship and if you want to buy a small keepsake or something practical.
My Grandparents bought the car seat for my two girls (neither were around when my son was born sadly) and also a teddy. My In-laws bought a cot bed for my first and a pram for my second. For the third they bought his car seat.
My Aunt bought us a voucher for a baby photo shoot each time. Not anything mega fancy, but it's one of the best gifts as I'd never have got round to organising it myself and they got them done when tiny and I love the pics. She also done that for her grandchildren.0 -

Personally we have been helped a fair bit with pushchair, car seat and some storage units. We have one set of parents who haven't mentioned it yet but we are nearly done with getting what is needed, we have no space, live in a small house and so if they ask we would politely request money in a savings account for the future.Everything is always better after a cup of tea0

I think mine and OH parents will contribute to either the pram, or the nursery furniture
The in laws have also said that they will buy the baby/child token gifts for birthdays and xmas and put money into a savings account for when s/he is older (for uni, or a towards a house deposit...I can't think that far ahead as I am only 11 weeks pregnant

My mum bought us nappies, wipes, vests, etc. etc. all really useful stuff and I was eternally grateful (thanks again m&d
) They live a fair distance so useful stuff they could bring over was brilliant. She was also doing it two times over as my brother and his wife were having their first baby too

My parents gave us a pram (as they did for my niece) and inlaws bought the cot. Mum also went loopy and bought enough outfits to clothe sextuplets right up until school age :rotfl:0

My parents bought the pram for my first as they did with my sisters first baby.
For the second baby they bought a lovely co-ordinating bedding set.
Also they bought bits and pieces clothes wise when the baby actually arrived1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

My parents started putting aside anything they won on the Lottery during my pregnancy (six months worth anyway as DS arrived early!), which amounted to about £650, and then from that bought the pram (we bought the matching car seat) and the cot, mattress and bedding. And probably a million and one other things.. DS is now three and Mum still seems to buy him something new every week!0

Don't worry about buying anything love and time are the best things that grandparents can ever give.
All the 'things' that my boys ever had when they were born were kept by their dad when we split up - a control thing on his part, I just hope that he's kept them for the boys when they are older?0 -
I would say the big things, my mum bought the pram, cot, car seat and moses basket which done 2 babies.0
