If you are anything like my mother in law, sod all.

My mum bought the cot when I had my son. She got my sister the pram. So we have both been treated fairly.

Although I think it is the done thing to make a purchase for the first gc, I think it's the thought that counts. At this expensive time, a little outfit, vouchers, offer to do some housework, or babysit at a later date would all be appreciated (by me, anyway!)
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

I personally wouldncheck with thenparents, and help them by giving a rough price guide. My BIL opted for antop of the range travel system and buggy which I know my in- laws were very taken aback by when theybsaw the price. Consequently to be 'fair' we ended up with loads of stuff, some very personal (baby's first outfit, going home from hospital outfit, loads and loads of clothes that weren't my taste) and at the time I resented the fact that it felt like there was nothing left for me to get.

Personally I think cash is a cold but good idea, the parents can buy something or save it for themselves or the child. Our son has a decent amount of money put away for when he's older because of the people whonasked and didn't mind doing that. Much better than a load of baby clothes that last 5 mins!

Good luck and enjoy your first grandchild.
