  • Thanks for the link Soblivion hopefully I will begin to understand. Tine where did you buy your measures? Can you get them on Ebay. I do a lot of shopping on line as I have rheumatoid disease and Sjogrens Syndrome and cannot always get out.

    Thanks again.

Or be as sad as me and just buy a set of US measuring jugs *slinks off in shame at being so lazy*

Me too! In fact I wish all recipes were in cups cos it's so much easier to measure than weighing! Not often I think Americans are right but on this one I think they are - just scoop and go!

And I meant to say Queenie - thanks for the original link - it looks great and I think I'm going to print the whole booklet to browse at my leisure!

QUEENIE - have just found this thread and wanted to say thanks for the link. I'm printing it off as I type; this is exactly the type of thing I've been looking for and I know I'll use it loads and loads. I'm going to spend a day this week making up all the mixes I know I'll use and it will help with meal planning as well.

There are lots of other really good links in the thread which are already on my Food, nutrition & recipes' favourites.

Thanks, Queenie, and everyone else who has posted such brilliant links.

Thanks for all the great ideas on here, I too am time poor and these tips will be a great help, I don't know how I muddled through life till I found all the lovely folks on this site, it's like being part of a lovely big family. Sorry to be so gushing but you know what I mean. Anyhoo, when I go to the fridge to get milk to make me yorkshire puds I often find an empty milk carton there (young person in house) and why do they put the empty one back? So I think I will make a mix using dried milk and flour, then I will just need to add egg and water. How much milk do you think to use with 4oz of flour?

It's not just 'young people' who put empty cartons back in the fridge! My OH (aged 40) does it constantly - and it drives me absolutely potty  .

As we've been together for 17+ years, I can only come to the conclusion that he does it deliberately to really p%*s me off!!!

I've made the oatmeal and raisin cookies this morning and I've just made the peanut butter cookies. Almost all of the oatmeal and raisin ones have gone already and the uncooked peanut butter mixture was delish. I don't think they're going to last long either! And they were really quick to make - I think about 10 minutes from thinking about it to putting them in the oven. Thanks again Queenie.
  • In answer to Jinny's query re the milk ratio, I used to work out how much ordinary, wet milk I'd need and then work out how much dried I'd need to make up that amount ... so if I needed half a pint to make up the recipe I'd look on the packet and divide the amount needed to make up a pint by two and put that in .... simplistic, I know, but it worked for me.

And those empty cartons? Wash them out and reuse them as containers for your mixes! The plastic "jugs" are ideal and the cardboard cartons with the foil linings [does anyone get waxed cartons these days? you know the ones I mean? Not the plastic lined ones] are ok if you are happy to reseal them properly - I can't be bothered. If I'm trying to save time then funnelling everything into a tiny hole and then shaking it out again sort of defeats me!

If you have a recycling facility near you, ask if you can have half a dozen of the 2 pint ones - I find they're the best - they hold a lot of mix and you use it up before it goes off. If you're using large amounts then I suppose venturing up into the 2 litre ones might work... I'm just not that brave [or that organised!]

oh wow!! Thank you so much for this thread - I've been dispairing a little with menu planning and especially ideas for rice and savoury bits and pieces for packed lunches and these sites are amazing!!:D

When you make the mixes, and then make the cookies/biscuits, is it possible to then freeze them ready to be taken out the night before to be put in a packed lunch?
