Found a link on here the other day where you can make these up yourselves. Just pondering it as I may do something about it at the weekend, but:-

When they say flour, do they mean plain flour?

What is canola oil? Can you buy it in Tesco?

Is nonfat dry milk the same stuff that I put in when I'm making bread? Ie. powdered milk healthy living from Tesco?

How can I convert American measures to English?

    Pollyanna,

I have merged your thread into the convenience mix thread as you should be able to find answers to your questions there.

AS has been said above canola oil is rape seed oil - it's very healthy, one of the healthiest oils you can use and doesn't burn at high temp like olive oil can or leave that yellow residue that sunflower oil does IMO. It's also v cheap.

I was in despair a little while ago because I couldn't find it on the shelves - then I noticed that Sainsbury's veg oil had a picture of a familiar yellow flower on the front (anyone who lives in Bedfordshire has seen miles of rape fields) and saw that it was indeed rape seed oil.

Queenie, can you tell me if you used margarine as the recipes call for or did you try them with butter (marge is another black mark against them for me I'm afraid:D )

Has anyone else tried them with butter (or veg oil) ?

I was interested in the comments on page 5 of the .pdf about substituting oil for marge/butter in baking. I would be interested to know if anyone has done this with success and if so what quantities they use as a rule of thumb for substitution.
  • ving only just found this thread, I thought I'd post that the Make-A-Mix book has saved my sanity on many a week. Some of the mixes are a little to "exotic" for my/our family's tastes but the rest of them are very good, work EVERY time if you follow the instructions properly and save a "whole bunch of time", as my USA DIL2b would say.

I found that if you save your milk cartons [they call them jugs] and, obviously washed and dried thoroughly!, store your mixes in them then if they need keeping in the'fridge it's easy as they stack well, in the cupboard it's simple and ideal for the freezer, also they're "free" - what more can you ask for? :D

This thread has reminded me to get back into the kitchen and make them again. *hmmm, wonder where the book is now....* Even just having the white sauce and pastry/crumble mixes ready in the 'fridge, along with various mince "helpers" is a huge incentive to getting back to proper cooking [as opposed to quick and boring stuff, not take-away!] again.

So, hurrah for our cousins across the pond and hurrah for all the make ahead mixes that MSE-ers come up with on here!
If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!! :D

Just found your pancake recipe, and just wanted to make sure that your mix is for 6tbsp of baking powder (normally only use it in small quantities and thought it might have been 6 tsp instead)
    Thanks jay-jay
I hope that my child, looking back on today
    Will remember a mother who had time to play;

There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.

I'm overjoyed that there's a taco mix on there, Himself has become addicted to Tacos (sigh) but what on earth is an instant onion! (I figure it's onion granules actually thinking about it)

    Essentially, thanks Queenie :-)

Fritha, the little rodent avatar was on my shortlist! It is sooo cute.

:T Really glad this thread has come to life again as I had lost the recipes I had printed off. Gone totally mad and printed out the lot this time! Off for a read now!
