London Olympics Panic! - Britain's Useless Athletes Unable to Win Gold

A bit of fun... The Economist blog has done a piece on the "Infomatic Games" linking to some of the different interactive tools you can play with such as the BBC one where you can plug in your height and weight to see what type of athlete you would be and one from the Guardian where you can put in your times and race against the greats. My personal favourite is the one that asks "If Michael Phelps was a country" and compares his medal tally and that of other great Olympians with individual nations. There's also the google doodles on google (not linked to).
Here's the link to the Economist:

I agree, I suspect that in a lot of athletics clubs they think, "The black geezer can run and the white bloke can chuck a spear or a discus".0 -
If we are going to maintain a House of Lords, I think it is people like Sir Steve Redgrave who should be elevated to the peerage – rather than the bloated, repulsive bankers and the like who do favours for labour and the tories.
I loved the way Redgrave congratulated Hoy for his win, saying that he would be going back to competition racing to beat Hoy's medal count! Redgrave is such a brilliant role model (loved the way he supported the rowers as well), as are people like Hoy and Ainslie.
And I do wish presenters on TV would stop calling Lord Coe 'Lord Sebastian Coe', which is incorrect. Ignoramuses!0 -
Another thing: it was good to see the British team win over the Germans in the dressage events.
I haven't been watching dressage – apart from bits and pieces of it – but heard from a friend that one of the Germans was incredibly cruel to his horse when it did not want to do some move (the Germans use spurs and whips, which should be banned in my view). Another horse apparently had a bloody mouth.
Although this sport is beautiful to look at, I have my doubts about it...0 -

Anyone watching the BMX? It's hypnotic watching them go over those bumps. Amazing skills.
Ouch! Not so hypnotic when they crash!0 -

i watched it for a bit, but decided it was rubbish. i'm now watching the showjumping, although i'm not really convinced that it is any less rubbish. both are still much better than greco-roman wrestling, which is a complete mystery to me.0 -

Couldn't get into it, to me it looked a poor relation to the cycling that we have already had, but that's just my opinion of course.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

Wish I got tickets to it. However I'm going to the mountain biking at the weekend which I'm really looking forward to.0 -
Is it just me, or is anyone else finding the athletics boring? It all seems to be rather samey to me. If you don't particularly like team games, then all those volley ball and ping pong games don't appeal, either.
Perhaps one has been rather spoiled by the spectacular British rowing, bicycling, swimming (Michael Phelps especially) and other water sports? Or maybe it's a matter of personal preference? Visually, these sports just seem so much more exciting.
I always used to find athletics exciting, so dunno quite why I feel this way about it now. :cool:0
