I used a semi-permanent today to cover my grey in advance of my holiday in September. It was supposed to be a mid brown with a reddish tinge and it is almost black with vivid purple undertones!

I hate it and it makes me look ill :( What can I do? It is supposed to last 24 washes. Can I strip it out with anything?

It was a Boots Botanics one and I am going to complain but I am guessing they will only refund me the £3 it cost which isn't going to help me resolve it. But it is absolutely not the colour on the box at all, not even close.

It looks awful :( Help!

    Hello

I feel your pain as I have had a few home hair dye disasters myself.

As it is only a semi you have a really good chance of getting rid of it. I used semi permanents for a while and when I wanted it to fade out I washed with my OH's head and shoulders and it did fade it down.

I have also heard washing up liquid or vosene shampoo but haven't tried them.

I have heard some bad reviews of boots botanics so definately complain.

As a rule of thumb now I always choose a shade lighter as semi permanents always seem to be darker on me than the box.

Hope you manage to tone it down a bit. x

You can use a colour remover - but be warne it smells foul and may well strip out several colours so you will need to re-dye to fix that,

better thing to do is try an lift the colour you have, head and shoulders works best but a hot oil treatment will wash a lot away, even washing up liquid. anything that will strip the hair colour off a bit - be prepared for lots of washing !

Get a box of ColourB4 colour remover from Boots or any other good chemist. As long as your hair isnt bleached, it should remove the colour youve put on.

You can buy colour remover. Never tried them however, so can't recommend, but look at this link below for what you can get.

Would imagine you can get some or all or others in most places that sell large ranges of hair dye. superdrug, boots, and I think i saw one in Home Bargains too. So try those places first.

Original head and shoulders rubbed thoroughly into dry hair and then well rinsed. Do it as many times as you can manage without conditioning. It will fade REALLY quickly.

    Thank you all.

My mate told me I couldn;t strip it out but it seems maybe I can which is good news. She did mention vosene and Head and Shoulders though, so those obviously do work, will have to get one. I hate washing my hair though! It is so hard to blow dry and cannot be left to dry naturally.

I am so cross and upset because it is blatently NOT the colour on the packet. I wouldn't mind if it were just a dark version of what I chose but it is completely different. Literally gothic.

I'll look into strippers (as it were) and wash it a lot with those shampoos as well. I don't want to ruin its condition as I plan to do a keratin straightening treatment in a few weeks' time.

I wish I'd just stuck with my greys!

definitely try Colour B4 by scott cornwall. you will need a dye on afterwards, but it will be fine, just dont leave it on as long as you normally would as your hair will be more porous

Ooh that's great to have a recommendation. I did wonder if anyone had tried the colour removers. I'm happy to redye but can anyone recommend a good one? I want to be a mid brown, I'm naturally mid to dark brown with quite a lot of grey.

MummyOfTwo - how long would you leave it on for? Half the time?

yes, if that - just keep checking to see if its covered enough. i took a dark brown off my hair using that (i also did a strand test first, which my hairdresser sisters couldnt believe!). it has no bleach in or anything, cant recall how it works but it does. as i remember, the key its to spend the full twenty minutes rinsing the color remover, very crucial to do that.
