Clothes buying - buy some "classic" styles in trousers/jackets etc, "good" cotton shirts and other things that don't really date.
Don't throw away/take to charity shop "good" stuff.
Start of each season, wander round the shops (don't spend) look at what is the current trend.
Then when you have given it some thought, buy a few cheap things - mix 'n match with your classics to give you a relatively up to date look for little money. Also look in charity shops for other people's "mistakes" - which might well suit you.
Been doing this since I was in my late 20s. Sometimes a scarf or belt makes the difference. Don't always follow trends anyway (unless you are 15 and absolutely HAVE to "fit in". Develop your own style.
I love the idea of getting a friend to take a look at your wardrobe and suggest clothes combinations you might not have thought of.
And you have all said it here - if you don't need it, it ain't a bargain!0 -

Hey, just read your message - well done!
The nearest I can get to that is I needed a black jacket/cardi for a family get together. I looked everywhere and eventually decided upon a back cardi for £25 in BHS. On the way back to the store to buy it, I popped into M&S and found a lovely black jacket in their sale for £9, so ended up saving myself £16!! :j

Well done!
I do the same thing in the shops - I grab what I "desperately need", put it in my basket, then wonder around the shop for a while. It's amazing the amount of times I put things back after thinking about it for a while. If I went straight to the checkout everytime I went shopping, either in the sales or normal, we would have needed a new house by now!!!What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Got two pairs of suede loafers in hawkshead last week for £5 each which I may not need right away but they are such classic (unfashionable) style they can sit in the wardrobe till the ones I'm currently wearing are worn out. At that price I don't consider them an extravagance. However the radley bag I bought last month was an extravagance but it had taken me two years of shopping around to splash out.0
