Hi all

I have today become the owner of a 2009 Zafira. Its previous owner was disabled.

The garage where we bought the car asked if I - or anyone in the family - was disabled. Not me but my mother in law is 87 and is registered disabled. She has a Blue Badge and now lives with us permanently.

Can I benefit from any special exemptions for having my MIL live with us? Would it be of benefit if I put her as the registered keeper?

How do I go about this?

I've been trying to fathom this out all day but have failed. I can't get through to the DVLA by phone and the web is sending me round in circles.

Any help you can offer would be most gratefully appreciated.

she doesn't need to be the registered keeper, she needs to be eligable for mobility.

However, to qualify for the free tax, the car is meant to be used only for her so that means you can't use it for running the kids to school etc or for commuting.

Likewise the blue badge. It is hers and can only be used by her. If it is abused they can take the benefit off her (although I am sure a lot of people get away with it).

If it really is a family car, I'd pay the tax but do use the badge if you need to take her out etc.

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Fivetide is spot on with the advice. However, you can use the car to go and pick up prescriptions without her in it (not the blue badge though), or go shopping etc. It's quite funny the way it works. Say for example, you got the bigger car to accommodate the wheelchair, would they not be able to use the disabled tax class then? You would be better calling the disability adviser, Maybe if you call them they would be able to give you a definite answer.

The DVLA leaflet says - "If the vehicle is ever used in a way which is not directly for the purposes of the disabled person .... you must tax the vehicle in the appropriate tax class"

Surely to claim Mobility allowance you have to be under 65 yrs old.. thats what I understand the rules to say.. unless you are already receiving mobility allowance before 65.

To make a fresh claim for DLA you have to be under 65. If you've been in receipt of the benefit since before your 65th you continue to receive it. You can nominate a driver at anytime. And change your driver at anytime.

Just pay the duty and don't be so tight.

If she gets HR Mobility she will automatically get an exemption certificate with her paperwork.

So your publicly asking for help to find a way to abuse the system? Wow!

Thank you for your helpful and kindly advice. I knew I was asking in the right place for clarification of rules.

Except Flyboy152 and arcon5, of course, as I do not appreciate being accused of not paying my way or trying to avoid any legal responsibilities.

That is exactly what you are doing. You are attempting to circumvent the system by manipulating someone else's entitlement.
