Hello all,
On the scrounge for information, advice, opinions etc. regarding faulty laptop as above.
Basically I was asked to look at my Aunt's Acer Aspire 5553 laptop today to see if I could get it to work. It was purchased exactly 14 months ago today from Curries, which obviously includes the standard 12 month manufacturer's warranty. Bizarrely enough, when I asked my Aunt if they tried to flog her an extended warranty she said no, which I was flabbergasted at. Normally they're trying to ram these things down your throat instore lol!! If she had had that, her pc woes would've ended there probably (hopefully).
So this evening, I've tried a few system recovery options which have been unsuccessful and as such, I'm not going to tinker with it anymore. The computer has been barely used by her so I know there's no issue with viruses or malicious software etc.
So my question is: is there no extenuating circumstances where retailers/manufacturers are still obliged to repair an item after the 12 month period elapses?
As an example - an electronic device that goes on the blink a week after the warranty expires? Surely they couldn't snub that could they? A second example would be a £1500 flat screen tv that develops a fault 18 months after purchase. Surely warranty claims such as these can't be refused can they?? These are hypothetical of course but you get my meaning here??
Am I pushing my luck by going back to the store after 8 weeks?
The thing is the damn thing went on the blink within the 12 months and the stupid woman done nothing about until I looked at it today for her!!
Of course I'm anticipating getting the rubber ear from Curries, but I'd be very interested in some of your thoughts before I go in and try and reason with them.
No doubt they'll just try and push their £50 diagnostic service Sigh!!
Thank you in advance.

I would try deleteing all partitions and formatting it then install the windows from a disk.
I doubt sale of good act will cover a Operating system going dodge.
if its a hardware issue then you would need to go down the sale of good act route proving its faulty blah blah blah.0 -

I wouldn't do that.
The recovery partition, which is the best way to fix a laptop requiring reinstall is not something you should delete.
What exactly is the problem with the laptop?
Also, you would need to have an engineer look at it and decide, and document in his expert opinion if the problem is manufacturing or other, if other you have to foot the bill for the report and you are no further forward in getting it repaired for free.
If manufacturing though, Curry's should repair it and in most cases the retailer involved will provide a refund for the required engineers report.0 -
If its in the warrantee time you can ask to the company for the repair, you can also go to the consumer courts.0

It's not under warranty. The computer has been barely used by her so I know there's no issue with viruses or malicious software etc.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Hi Juneau
It might be worth asking for help on our Techy Board with resolving the laptop problems - so I'll move the thread across for you.
If you can't find a solution, then by all means come back here for advice.

There will be some more knowledgeable people along soon, but if the problem that some part of the machine is broken or just that the operating system has become corrupt?
I suggest the latter which is never covered under warranty anyway, all you will be told to do is to re-install either via the CD/DVD's provided or from the restore partition (d: drive). If your Aunt has hardly used it then it is doubtful she has anything saved on there? which does make it easier.
