You have no chance at all of getting DSG to repair it after the warranty has expired. You could try Acer direct, as there is nothing to lose. But start with a Factory Restore. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi all
Thanks again for your replies.
I've been on Acer website and they specifically state that all Acer products purchased at Currys/PC World must be returned there, so there's no problem there.
The problem itself is quite odd: You power the laptop up - The Acer logo appears, then POST screen instructing to press F2 to enter BIOS, F8 to enter Safe Mode/ with Networking etc.
Then it progresses to the Microsoft loading screen with green progress bar shifting from left to right which again is all completely normal.
The screen then blanks out and it just sits there with power on, various lights for wi-fi etc as it should do.
I've tried Start up repair process which it won't enter, it won't start when you select start windows normally, Ir won't return to a system restore point because a restore point was never set.
Finally, when it eventually enters safe mode (after 10 mins or so) all there is is the cursor on the windos desktop background. No start menu no icons, no ctrl-alt-delete. Nothing at all.
Also, pressing Alt-F10 to return to factory default settings didn't work either. Tried to use recovery disc via cd-rom boot and by usb optical drive. I obviously changed the boot order in BIOS to do that.
To the person that commented that my point regarding virus and malicious software didn't make sense, I meant that she doesn't download files or visit dodgy sites that could've installed nasty software although these days even legitimate sites are no doubt sticking stuff on your computer.
She told me that quite literally, the only sites she has visited has been Gumtree and a couple of knitting and crocheting blogs. So this iswhy I'm sure there is no malicious software issues.
I hope I've answereda couple of questions and I look forward to hearing form you all further.:)0 -

A recent Symantec report showed that blogs and personal hosted sites are among the most dangerous to visit.

As for the problem in hand, try running chkdsk from a command prompt in the Recovery Environment.0 -

Could be the installation files or a profile for users have become damaged. Do you have access to downloading an ISO DVD for the laptop to use.
You can repair the windows installation source files through the advanced startup repair option IIRC.Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them
