After looking at all the tablets available, it's between 2 :

Lenovo IdeaPad K1

Samsung Galaxy Tab2

It will be mainly for email - internet surfing - iplayer - youtube - games. Not so much for social networking.

The Lenovo has more storage than the Samsung, but it seems that the expert review give it a lower rate for the picture quality.
The Samsung seems to have a better picture, but less storage space.
Both are in my price range, with the Lenovo cheaper than the Samsung.
Both seem to be highly rated from their users, though the experts seems to find the Lenovo not as good as the samsung.

I have never had a tablet before, and it makes it harder to chose between the two. I haven't any experiences with that kind of interface, as my mobile phone is still an antic sony ericsson S500I . I can't try them for ease of use, or to see how nippy and bug free they can be, or not. The Lenovo seems to have had a few problems which seems to have disappeared with a few updates.

Part of me wants to go for the cheapest, as it is my first tablet, and another part of me wants to go for Samsung, as it is one of the best brand, and rated higher by the expert reviews.

What do you think?

I personally would go for the Samsung as it's a bigger name tablet and I think it looks better too, it has a microSD card slot and with a 32GB card costing ~£12-£15 it's not a awful lot for expanding the 16GB if you need to.

I wouldn't worry about the storage on the Samsung, it's got a memory card slot so you can add storage.

Where do you want to use this tablet? Do you want to carry it about during the day? Will you be using it on wifi or 3G or both?

It would be mainly indoors, but I would like the possibility to take it with me and be able to connect to the internet on the move. I am not knowledgeable about 3G, I don't know what I would need to make it work. I suppose you need a sim card for 3G?

Yes you need a sim card, it's just like how a mobile phone connects to the internet.
You'll also need to make sure you get the 3G version of the tablet, not just the wifi one.

if the places you are going to use it will have WiFi (eg a coffee shop, ect.)) you wouldn't really need 3G, you can in the future buy and use a MiFi device to allow a WiFi only tablet to use 3G which is a good option if you didn't want to spend extra money on a tablet with 3G built in now or it's something you think you wouldn't use often.

It's a good point about MiFi.

That depends on the cost of the mi-fi unit. If you're only going to use it for one device, then paying the extra might be worth it. There again, you can get a much better signal with mifi than with a sim card inside your tablet if you are in an area of poor reception..

If you've got a smartphone, it might be able to act as a MiFi already....

Which is the money saving way forward - no extra hardware and only one contract.

Indeed. I use my tablet over my Android phones 3G connection quite a lot. Just be careful of data allowances if you do do this as it's surprisingly easy to blow the data plan out of the window. :(
