To see if it could be the CPU overheating, you could try Core Temp...

Jamie - Think that's my next job.
I'll check the BIOS for fan speeds and temps as well.

John - don't think it'll stay on long enough to download and install it.

The odd thing about it (to me) is that it doesn't come back on straight away if you press the power button, but if I switch off the wall socket it's plugged into and switch it back on, the computer starts up for about 10 minutes and then dies again.

deffo PSU issue.....£12 or less for a new one. Still need to clean out fans, heatsink compound, etc., but this will be the main thing.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a good clean when I replace the PSU.
Does a mini-tower have a specific PSU type or will one from a (working) old tower do?

Should work, as long as it has the right connections.

I'm just thinking space and having the AC input socket in the right place.

Possibly but you should still be able to use it to test the machine, it does not have to go inside the case.

    That's a good point.
I'll take the old one out and I can check for part numbers, etc.

This site is most useful for sorting out PSU dimensions:-

I would advise against installing this unless you like your homepage reset, other unneeded software and toolbars installing. Yes you can prevent it from installing Yahoo toolbar and homepage in the install settings but it still manages to install another horrid toolbar and another piece of unneeded software (and most likely spyware). Avoid.
